Celebrating 5 years: ‘Magic Babe’ Ning & J C Sum’s limited edition Pentad Deck!

2 years in the making, our exclusive “Pentad Deck” is now here! These cards are on a limited edition run & will not be reprinted once they’re sold out. International magic supplier, Murphys Magic, carries them so you can easily order your “Pentad Deck” from your favorite magic shop!

Alternatively, you may also purchase your cards directly from us at Magic Boutique; we do autographs upon requests 🙂 Click on the link for more details!

These Gemaco® casino quality poker-sized cards are printed in the U.S.A. on fine European paper stock and features regular faces. Each “Pentad Deck” also includes an extra blank-face card. The deck is encased in an all-silver tuck case with a clear front window that shows off the full color playing card back design.

Special kudos to our Japan-based manga artist Eldred, photographer Bernard Sim & graphic designer Matt for their input too! 🙂

J C & I are super thrilled that our limited edition “Pentad Decks” are simply flying off the shelves and according to Murphys Magic, more than a hundred sets of our “Pentad Decks” were sold just overnight. Woot!!!

As you may have read, “Pentad” is the classical Greek Pythagorean term used for the quantity of five and also refers to a period of five years. So our “Pentad Deck” basically commemorates our half-decade of J C & yours truly’s magical partnership. However, there’s more to it…

I personally love the deeper meaning of “Pentad” and when time allows, do read this interesting essay, which gives a brief insight on Pythagoras and the mystery of numbers. The “Pentad” is a powerful symbol with a rich history. It was used by mysterious Greek cults of old, as well as, the earlier Christians to represent the 5 sacred wounds of Jesus Christ (his hands, feet and side).

Righty, I should stop all this geeky babble… but history and mythology simply fascinates! Anyway, thank you so much for your support all these years. More to come because…….

Tomorrow we will officially announce our 9th mega illusion! Stay tuned to this blog & http://www.facebook.com/jcsum.magicbabening

My favorite Magic Wand, ever!!!

As some of you may know, a quirky hobby of mine is collecting magic wands. Like the old-school top hat, distinguished wands represent a legacy of magic. My humble collection consists of wooden wands, plastic wands, Harry Potter wands… and even stylized wands that could “magically” blast light out from it’s tip, that I created and soldiered myself!

All that said, some wands don’t last. I’ve bought locally crafted wooden wands that start to warp and bend after some time, because the makers didn’t treat the wood properly… plus the high humidity and heat here in sunny Singapore really doesn’t help.

That’s why I was particularly impressed with the supremely well-made magic wands Michael Myatt of USA personally handcrafts. For his popular 2-part wands, Michael usually works with high-quality wood and metal but the special wand he made for me is a wildly gorgeous hot pink acrylic with beautiful white swirls, complete with elegant black tips.

It was love at first sight 🙂 I really love my exotic looking wand… Thank you Michael!

Magicians and wand collectors really ought to check out his website, Moonlight Magic Productions. Michael and his team of other talented artisans also make matching coin boxes and other interesting accessories. IMHO, the pictures don’t do the actual products justice. IT’s obvious to me that the folks at Moonlight Magic are a passionate bunch who do their work with pride.

I recently used my brand new wand as a magic prop in the recent cover photoshoot for Guardian magazine (due out in Jan 2012) and even the photographer & stylist were commenting on how stylish it looked! They fitted me into a gorgeous pink dress from a UK designer, and here’s me playing Tinkerbell. Hee hee.

I’ll blog more about the magazine cover photo shoot in a bit… It hits all Guardian outlets nationwide in Jan 2012, and there’s apparently going to be a lifesize cut-out of me too! Now if I can only make my “clones” multi-task so I can chillax! Haha… Click here for pictures J C took while at the cover photo shoot.

Ta for now, more later!

The Magic Pilgrim is back…

HELLO WORLD!!!!! Namaste! Bonjour! Kuzu zangpo! Aloha! Assalamou Alykoum! Ciao! Tsonga!

These are just a handful of greetings I’d learnt during my 9 non-stop months of constant traveling for a book project with the BFF; we certainly had many adventures together – some funny, others nerve-wrecking, but what doesn’t kill you certainly makes you stronger (like learning never to store your trusty laptop with all your written drafts in your check-in luggage in Madagascar).

Pam & I really both missed our loved ones in Singapore, it’s not easy when people you care about are miles away, so I’m truly glad to be finally back HOME because truly, there’s just no other place quite like it 🙂

Reflectively, I know I’ve certainly changed a lot during the time away from home. It’s been an insightful inner journey for me too, not just a physical one. The girl whose blog you’re reading, is no longer the same person who left 9 months ago. I am grateful for the many “teachers” I’ve met along the way, who have so generously taught me in their own ways, how to open my heart and live… not just to merely exist.

Our book chronicals the adventures of two BFFs (Best Friends Forever) comes out next year just before Christmas, so do look out for it 🙂 International literary giant, Marshall Cavendish International (Asia), is our publisher.

Honestly, I’m really excited because ever since I was a child, I’d dreamt of being a writer… much like one of my favorite women authors Anais Nin, who cleverly stated that “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection.”

So like everything else that I’m passionate about in my life, this Libra girl is going to make sure she does her very best and balances everything on her plate well. And geez, is it one big heavy plate!

Coming back to my 2nd home, the Concept:Magic studio, was comforting despite already knowing what’s in store for me for the next quarter and a half 🙂 I’d just touched down yesterday in Changi International Airport, and this morning already saw me engaging in intensive rehearsals for…

*brace yourselves*

…Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde!!!!

Yes, my stage partner J C Sum & I with our team will be flying to Paris next week for the TV taping of the popular French magic gala show, which broadcasts in all French speaking countries and then some. Our episode screens on New Year’s Eve, and those with cable in Singapore can also tune in to watch it on TV5 Monde!

It certainly is a great honor, and I’m deeply grateful and humbled to be one half of the performing team that can make Singapore proud since this is the first time the producers of this long-running hit magic television show has arranged for Singaporean local talent over! Truly, I hope our country will have the opportunity to have more homegrown magic stars over in the near future… We’re really much more than just a little red dot 😉

Anyway, do stay tuned to our blogs, ‘cos J C & I have more super exciting news to share with all of y’all very soon. There’s some truly cool magic projects we have that once again, we really hope to infuse more positive power to our local performing community and empower more up-and-coming magicians/ enthusiasts.

Ta for now, more later!

Back and so ready to rock, roll, teleport and then some…

Last day of 2010…

Heya folks.

It’s the last few hours of the year before 2011 greets us after the stroke of midnight. Has it been an awesome year for you? Someone wise once told me it’s not the number of years that count but really, the life you had in those years given. Food for thought, eh.

Anyway. J C made a great blog post here about all the amazing projects we’ve done for 2010. Everything is in chronological order, with pictures and videos and details. Do check it out 🙂

Personally, 2010 has been a truly brilliant year and I’ve learnt so much. I got to make new friends who are truly precious gems, experience new places and different things, and also served to inspire people and help them blossom and be better, somehow in my own quirky way.

That is actually the most important to me, because it gives purpose to my existence here on Earth, so I’m really very thankful to be able to give back this way.

The year for me has been a pretty crazy roller-coaster ride of sorts, but I’ve always been a firm believer or “everything happens for a reason” but I’ve been very blessed and will continue to believe in the greater good and also in paying it forward, whenever I can.

I think 2011 is going to teach me new things. To be more brave and courageous. To be more open to crazy unknown challenges. To simply live life and love all the adventures (the good and the bad!) that will come.

This unpredictable magician who believes in living life to the fullest has something massively insane up her sleeve and will reveal it shortly, in due time 😉 It’s going to be something that will shock some.

The very first clue about this will have to be something from Eleanor “Do one thing every day that scares you” Roosevelt. She wisely shared:

“We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face… we must do that which we think we cannot.”

Okay so maybe that may be a bit vague… More hints and clues to follow, but meanwhile, do enjoy the very last day of 2010 and celebrate it with the ones who matter.

Wishing you a fantastic year ahead where 2011 will be the most awesome yet,

Magic Boutique MEGA SALE now on!

Heya folks!

Yesterday was really busy – we had stage shows at different venues, and it was quite the rush because of traffic… but I definitely had fun. Also helps that I work with a bunch of truly amazing people, and last evening, our illusion show at Clarke Quay saw us working with Daniel Ong & Adrian Pang (Club Med ambassador).

Which reminds me. Did you catch the grand finale of The Amazing Race Asia (season 4) on AXN Asia? 🙂

J C & I represented Singapore when filming for the popular reality show and the series creators approached us to come up with a magic + escapology challenge for the last few remaining contestants for the final lap!

We played judges as well, passing or failing the competing teams from the different Asian countries. The filming happened earlier in July and it was a riot *grin* It was all fun of course, and J C & I are glad to be a part of it!

It’s a pity we had a conflict of schedule so we had to turn down the show’s producers when they asked if J C & I could again, present and create another challenge for the current season of Amazing Race Australia. Would have been really fun but year-end is just our busiest time ever!!!

The Amazing Race Asia is one of my favorite TV shows. In fact, here’s a little known fact…

I actually auditioned for the very first season of Amazing Race Asia with my University classmate, Natasha Kim Bounaparte, because the two of us girls both LOVE to travel and we thought it’d be really cool to do this together.

However, the contestants picked to represent Singapore turned out to be local actress Melody Chen and her bestfriend instead. But Nats & I had a wicked time anyway… I think she still has our funny audition video, where we were up to our hilarious antics and all. Hah!

So it was kinda funny to me anyways, when I found myself playing judge for the last episode of the current season’s Amazing Race Asia, with the cameras in my face while J C & I were judging the contestants at St James, performing the magic and escapology sequence we taught them. Life sure is surreal!

I’ve got a special announcement for everyone, in case you haven’t already seen it on TwitterFacebook J C Sum & ‘Magic Babe’ Ning fan page and the on-going ads on Facebook…

Anyways… Today’s gonna be a long day for yours truly, as well as, the Concept:Magic team. We’ve got quite a few different illusion gigs at different locations tonight. If you’re at any of them, be sure to HOLLER *grin*

So amidst all the prep work for Sunday’s mega illusion The Aerial Exit, which is really exciting… I wanna share with you about my lil sister’s smashing party that’s happening soon at St James!

According to the organizers, to make things fun, do take note of the dresscode as a nifty color code for your current relationship status: RED if you are taken, AMBER if it’s complicated, GREEN if you’re available!

Tickets for the mixed age party (min. 16 years old – please bring ID!) happens this 21 Dec from 9pm to 3am and costs $20. Tix for the Traffik Light Affair can be purchased from: sales@khronosphere.com.sg

Please note that while I support the event, I’m not one of the organizers so I don’t have the full details.
