Celebrating 5 years: ‘Magic Babe’ Ning & J C Sum’s limited edition Pentad Deck!

2 years in the making, our exclusive “Pentad Deck” is now here! These cards are on a limited edition run & will not be reprinted once they’re sold out. International magic supplier, Murphys Magic, carries them so you can easily order your “Pentad Deck” from your favorite magic shop!

Alternatively, you may also purchase your cards directly from us at Magic Boutique; we do autographs upon requests 🙂 Click on the link for more details!

These Gemaco® casino quality poker-sized cards are printed in the U.S.A. on fine European paper stock and features regular faces. Each “Pentad Deck” also includes an extra blank-face card. The deck is encased in an all-silver tuck case with a clear front window that shows off the full color playing card back design.

Special kudos to our Japan-based manga artist Eldred, photographer Bernard Sim & graphic designer Matt for their input too! 🙂

J C & I are super thrilled that our limited edition “Pentad Decks” are simply flying off the shelves and according to Murphys Magic, more than a hundred sets of our “Pentad Decks” were sold just overnight. Woot!!!

As you may have read, “Pentad” is the classical Greek Pythagorean term used for the quantity of five and also refers to a period of five years. So our “Pentad Deck” basically commemorates our half-decade of J C & yours truly’s magical partnership. However, there’s more to it…

I personally love the deeper meaning of “Pentad” and when time allows, do read this interesting essay, which gives a brief insight on Pythagoras and the mystery of numbers. The “Pentad” is a powerful symbol with a rich history. It was used by mysterious Greek cults of old, as well as, the earlier Christians to represent the 5 sacred wounds of Jesus Christ (his hands, feet and side).

Righty, I should stop all this geeky babble… but history and mythology simply fascinates! Anyway, thank you so much for your support all these years. More to come because…….

Tomorrow we will officially announce our 9th mega illusion! Stay tuned to this blog & http://www.facebook.com/jcsum.magicbabening

My favorite Magic Wand, ever!!!

As some of you may know, a quirky hobby of mine is collecting magic wands. Like the old-school top hat, distinguished wands represent a legacy of magic. My humble collection consists of wooden wands, plastic wands, Harry Potter wands… and even stylized wands that could “magically” blast light out from it’s tip, that I created and soldiered myself!

All that said, some wands don’t last. I’ve bought locally crafted wooden wands that start to warp and bend after some time, because the makers didn’t treat the wood properly… plus the high humidity and heat here in sunny Singapore really doesn’t help.

That’s why I was particularly impressed with the supremely well-made magic wands Michael Myatt of USA personally handcrafts. For his popular 2-part wands, Michael usually works with high-quality wood and metal but the special wand he made for me is a wildly gorgeous hot pink acrylic with beautiful white swirls, complete with elegant black tips.

It was love at first sight 🙂 I really love my exotic looking wand… Thank you Michael!

Magicians and wand collectors really ought to check out his website, Moonlight Magic Productions. Michael and his team of other talented artisans also make matching coin boxes and other interesting accessories. IMHO, the pictures don’t do the actual products justice. IT’s obvious to me that the folks at Moonlight Magic are a passionate bunch who do their work with pride.

I recently used my brand new wand as a magic prop in the recent cover photoshoot for Guardian magazine (due out in Jan 2012) and even the photographer & stylist were commenting on how stylish it looked! They fitted me into a gorgeous pink dress from a UK designer, and here’s me playing Tinkerbell. Hee hee.

I’ll blog more about the magazine cover photo shoot in a bit… It hits all Guardian outlets nationwide in Jan 2012, and there’s apparently going to be a lifesize cut-out of me too! Now if I can only make my “clones” multi-task so I can chillax! Haha… Click here for pictures J C took while at the cover photo shoot.

Ta for now, more later!

Last day of 2010…

Heya folks.

It’s the last few hours of the year before 2011 greets us after the stroke of midnight. Has it been an awesome year for you? Someone wise once told me it’s not the number of years that count but really, the life you had in those years given. Food for thought, eh.

Anyway. J C made a great blog post here about all the amazing projects we’ve done for 2010. Everything is in chronological order, with pictures and videos and details. Do check it out 🙂

Personally, 2010 has been a truly brilliant year and I’ve learnt so much. I got to make new friends who are truly precious gems, experience new places and different things, and also served to inspire people and help them blossom and be better, somehow in my own quirky way.

That is actually the most important to me, because it gives purpose to my existence here on Earth, so I’m really very thankful to be able to give back this way.

The year for me has been a pretty crazy roller-coaster ride of sorts, but I’ve always been a firm believer or “everything happens for a reason” but I’ve been very blessed and will continue to believe in the greater good and also in paying it forward, whenever I can.

I think 2011 is going to teach me new things. To be more brave and courageous. To be more open to crazy unknown challenges. To simply live life and love all the adventures (the good and the bad!) that will come.

This unpredictable magician who believes in living life to the fullest has something massively insane up her sleeve and will reveal it shortly, in due time 😉 It’s going to be something that will shock some.

The very first clue about this will have to be something from Eleanor “Do one thing every day that scares you” Roosevelt. She wisely shared:

“We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face… we must do that which we think we cannot.”

Okay so maybe that may be a bit vague… More hints and clues to follow, but meanwhile, do enjoy the very last day of 2010 and celebrate it with the ones who matter.

Wishing you a fantastic year ahead where 2011 will be the most awesome yet,

Happy snappy with my photography coach, Liew Tong Leng…

I had the happiest Boxing Day ever, spending the bulk of it taking pictures on my new camera with my talented photography teacher, Liew Tong Leng, who’s currently on Mediacorp TV’s on-going photography reality TV show “The Big Shot”.

We spent hours, taking photos from day till night, and I learnt so much from this very talented shutterbug. Here’s a little taste of some pictures that Liew has taken right here in Singapore… Do note that copyright belongs to him, so please do not misuse his IP:

Liew is an excellent teacher. I learnt so much from him! Back in film school, I did take a module in photography but Liew isn’t just technically sound, he truly has the eye and is so talented in photography, it impresses me how humble and patient he is really… the BFF & I really enjoyed our sessions with him.

Chatting about photography on our walk back to where we parked our cars after a full day out on the shoot, Liew shared that he learnt some insights from another award-winning photographer… Steve McCurry (one of my favorite photographers ever), who I’d blogged about a little while back…

You’ve seen works by Steve McCurry before. For instance, the iconic Afghan Girl in TIME magazine. So anyway. Liew was sharing with Pam & I that he was having dinner with Steve McCurry when he was in Singapore for his “Unguarded Moment” exhibition at ACM (which I so totally loved!) and they were talking. Liew reflected on he advice McCurry gave him and condensed it as such:

1) Know how to stand out from the rest, to be special in people’s eyes

2) When you do that, and your work is solid, you’ll win over people’s hearts

Liew gave current examples and instances on how he basically thought outside the box, doing alternative things during “The Big Shot” where other competing photographers did very nice and professional but rather typical pictures for the given themes, while he stood out because his pictures were refreshingly different so that impressed the judges.

Photography and magic aren’t too different afterall *grin* I know, I know, I’m a magic geek for seeing this relation but it is true! It’s also the reason why people like J C Sum (you know, the guy I work with) are where they are today.

He’s also wise enough to know when to let go of certain acts, like his beautiful floating table routine for instance – J C was the very first Singaporean to perform the stage magic act years ago but since many magicians started performing it here… some badly, some using pirated props… J C stopped doing it and worked with other illusions, besides creating his own 🙂

Back to photography. Besides all the technical stuff that can frazzle your nerves because of the aperture calculations and all, I was also reminded that it’s an art – so one has to be patient, act fast, look at things from all perspectives and when it calls for it, dare seize opportunities.

Anyway. ‘Magic Babe’ Ning is no Liew Tong Leng or Steve McCurry, but I was still quite pleased with what I went home with. Mind you, these pictures were taken using a compact point and shoot camera & no photoshop was used!

For the night shot, I used a camera tripod for the long exposure, and love the effect of the light reflection on the Singapore River 🙂 There’s more pictures, but you can see them on Facebook.

If you’d like to check out more of Liew’s spectacular pictures, sign up for his photography courses or book him to take beautiful pictures for you – find him at liewtl.multiply.com

I understand that he’s going to launch a brand new website for next year, so stay tuned for that 😉 Meanwhile, don’t forget to catch the last episode of Mediacorp TV’s “The Big Shot” next week… will Liew win the grand prize? I’m definitely rooting for him!!!!

Red Dot Magic exclusives…

Just out, J C & yours truly’s exclusive video interviews with local magic news portal Red Dot Magic!

We took some time to shoot this the weekend before, and the savvy magic news reporters did ask us some very clever questions. Great job as always, RDM… Mucho kudos to y’all 🙂

I sincerely hope this 2-part interview will be of help to young magicians who (specifically) want to become a commercial success.

Check it out here (Part 1) and here (Part 2), or click on the embedded videos below and crank up your speakers 😉

This is simply us candidly sharing what J C & myself hold passionately dear to our hearts, and being completely honest about what worked for us.

We’ve never been concerned about being in some kind of popularity contest where magicians like us because we say nice things that stroke their ego. No.

While we may be unpopular because we believe in being completely professional and sincere, I think it’s vastly more important that we share what’s right so we can help others to improve – and at times the truth hurt. More so if one doesn’t have an open mind.

However it’s ok, it’s really personal opinions at the end of the day. I just really wish to see the magic community flourish and blossom, because there is great potential.

It’s just a bit of a waste when young magicians choose to perform safe and seen-plenty-of-times-before “same ole, same ole” when they can be so much better.

Anyways, J C & I have been doing workshops periodically here in Singapore for the magic community. We do not do it for money. We do it because we care about helping raise the bar of magic here.

Next year we’ll be in Penang, Malaysia and we’re looking forward to share our knowledge with the magicians across the Causeway. Do come by if you’d be in the area 😉 It’d be FUN!

For full details, visit: www.jcsum.com/penang See you then! 🙂

28 years and a day AKA when I grow up…

It rained softly this morning… a nice cozy “snuggle under the covers” moment while I enjoyed watching the intricate water patterns on my tall bedroom windows.

A big THANK YOU again to everyone who sent me Happy Birthday wishes, I truly appreciate you taking the time and love to send it my way 🙂

I am really superbly blessed to have you in my life. Thank you.

On top of the generous birthday present from Adeline, Weili also sent me a gorgeous birthday cake with the sweetest message ever… and I’m definitely gonna get fat (but a very happy chubby I will be) because there’s also a box of sinful patisserie from the wicked BFF!

They’re in my fridge right now as I type, and I suppose my breakfast for the next few days are practically taken care of *wry grin*

Oh yes… My article in The Sunday Times came out today 🙂 It’s a really awesome birthday present, thank you SPH! Here’s a low-res picture of the exclusive media interview… grab a copy or read it online on their website:

My last day being 27…

I turn 28 tomorrow but the funny thing really, is that I don’t feel much different from being 21. I’d been a late bloomer and slowly filled out, as did my self-confidence and stage gusto… so I wonder how being 28 would be like.

There are still so many things I yearn to do. Many beautiful places yet explored, far more lush experiences yet to relish. Life is wonderful, it really is… I recognize that I’ve been so lucky, being loved and cherished by so many wonderful friends who watch my back 🙂

As usual, I have 3 hours of intensive French classes every morning at Alliance Francaise, but this morning, my darling classmates had a sweet surprise in-stored for me and I didn’t even see it coming… Up till our break, when a huge birthday cake suddenly appeared right before my very eyes. Like magic 😉

So once again, a big THANK YOU to David (the lovable mastermind), Alvin, Anond, Apple, Bhawna, Catherine, Chiao Luan, Gary, Jing Jing, Janessa, Nandini, Tanya, Vanda, Yiyang, Cheryl, Gabbie, Sintje, Guillaume and Nour-Eddine! 🙂

If you read J C’s blog Backstage Business, you’d known that Friday was a hectic day for us – with a full day photo shoot at Greyberry Studios before an illusion show in the evening, with the usual rehearsals in between.

The shoot went well, and a sneak peak is now up on our J C Sum & ‘Magic Babe’ Ning Facebook wall… so do check it out 😉

Coming back to the studio after the shoot at Mok’s, I was busy with office paperwork when my sneaky Concept:Magic mates surprised both Larry & yours truly (because our birthdays are just days apart) with a huge birthday cake that had cute personalized figurines of all of us on it! Check it out…

Kinetic Gal, Larry the Daredevil Magician, 'Magic Babe' Ning, J C Sum & Joys

Is it super duper cute, or what? 😉

Libra people R us: Larry the Daredevil Magician & 'Magic Babe' Ning

Managed to take this picture of all of us on my mobile phone!

These figurines were on the cake, can you guess who's who? 😉

The funkiest Concept:Magic photoshoot ever...

Does this look familiar?

A hint... us with 360 sawing...

Heh. It was good fun, it really was… And I’m so lucky to get two scrumptious birthday cakes in a day, even before my actual hatch day *grin*

Last evening, our illusion show was at Shangrila for a private function with President SR Nathan being the guest-of-honor. This evening saw J C & myself again performing for another government related high-end event. It was brilliant 🙂 I always love it when the audience enjoy themselves and all parties (the client and our event partners) are happy…

And speaking about happy, here’s something that will certainly bring a smile to your face *grin*
