Thank you…

Heya 🙂

If you’ve been following this blog for years, I’d truly love to thank you of your wonderful support . After much consideration and deliberation, I’ve decided to stop this blog for now. However, I’m still online and very much on various social media platforms, so reaching me or finding out what’s up next is a breeze. For instance:

Twitter & instagram – Follow me @magicbabening 🙂 I make posts practically every other day

FacebookMagic/ Illusions/ Escapology/ etc (with J C Sum) & Adventures of 2 Girls (with my BFF/ co-writer Pamela Ho) & my personal one (which is unfortunately maxed out at 5000 friends)

Websites: Magic Boutique & Concept:Magic & FLY Entertainment (new website revamping)

STOMP Star blog

I’ll also be contributing blog entries and online articles on various magic & news/ lifestyle websites, so do look out for that. There’s only 24 hours in a day, so I’ve been doing the typical Libra balancing act again.. writing for my book on my 9 months trade around the world (Marshall Cavendish International Asia will be publishing it this year), plus my magic/ TV projects with FLY Entertainment, Sinema TV & all… besides the live shows that I’ve been traveling out of Singapore for. I’m still based here, but lately we’ve been getting more international gigs, which is cool… Europe, USA, Asia Pacific, Genting (Malaysia)… I’ll definitely tweet about it 😉

See you around & please, don’t be a stranger!

The Mind Heist: The Ultimate Social Magic Experiment

Happy 2012 everyone!

I trust you’re having a fantastic start to the year, with exciting possibilities and golden opportunities greeting you 🙂 If you missed our NYE performance on Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde (France’s most popular variety show that’s been running for 14 years now and still going very strong), you can watch it here:

60 million viewers around the world tune into it and we’ve been asked to come back this year by the TV producers… Really awesome that we can make Singapore proud again! And speaking of which…

On the days leading up to The Mind Heist, I’ve been extremely strict with myself in all the necessarily preparations for this mind experiment happening this Saturday that sees J C & yours truly attempting to set a world record for reading the minds of 100 different people in 1 sitting.

So that means more healthy food with lots of water, more meditation, more yoga and absolutely no alcohol, no late nights and no sex (I just leave that space blank on application forms).

As I poke on my keyboard, I have to admit that I’m feeling completely whacked out and exhausted. Don’t get me wrong now. This girl is still deeply excited about this never-been-done-before stunt which will take place at Sinema Old School. It’s just the mental and physical fatigue from all the intensive mind training, that’s getting to me.

However, I’ll definitely do my utmost BEST, simply because I want to do my country proud & I don’t believe in making excuses. You know… It’s incredible but us two Singaporeans, received the sincere blessings from Mr Vanni Pule, international president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Sign ups online for The Mind Heist have been encouraging, though plenty of people shared that they were highly afraid of getting their thoughts read by us, but were content to simply witness our mind heisting process. Hmph. Wusses!!! 😉

But seriously, I’m deeply moved and very appreciative of all the sincere support we’ve got from people not just here in Singapore, but from all over the world too… from Taiwan, to France, England, America, Australia, Spain, India, Canada, Israel, Malaysia, Middle East… it’s extremely touching! THANK YOU EVERYONE 🙂 The event as you know, will be streamed live on the internet in real time, so anyone anywhere will be able to join in!

The media (magic and mainstream) has also been nothing but super with event pre-publicity for The Mind Heist. In fact, several have even arranged for their plucky reporters to be part of the 100 in this mind experiment.

Just yesterday, we were on 987FM’s highly popular Muttons on the Move, with radio DJs Justin Ang & Vernon A:

If you missed us on the airwaves yesterday, here’s the video of us mind-heisting both JA & Vernon in the 987FM studio!

We’re also featured in an exclusive interview on the OMY lifestyle news portal:

As well as, on 4-pages of popular online news and entertainment portal, xinMSN:

ShinMin Daily News also published our story on their newspaper:

We were meant to be on 91.3FM this morning but our dear friend radio DJ Rod Monteiro was rushed to the hospital yesterday after getting a mild stroke while on air. Highly unexpected and very worrying, because Rod is such an active sporty guy. It’s shocking for me because I was just texting my friend yesterday. Please pray for his speedy recovery!

Oh yes…

J C & I will be on Channel News Asia‘s AMlive on Friday 8AM, so do tune in. Something very wicked this way comes 😉 And prior to that, we’ll be on Class95’s CarTunes with popular radio DJs Jean Danker & Bobby Tonelli at 6:30pm tomorrow (Thursday). Also, look out for our exclusive interview in the TODAY newspaper coming out very shortly.

A shout out of thanks to our friend Nicholas Chee, founder of Sinema Old School, for this picture taken with his smart phone. They’ve completely dressed up the place for us, mucho kudos to the passionate Sinema TV team.

We’re gonna make history this Saturday, Singapore!!!

Last day of 2011…

2011 has certainly been an eventful year for all of us. Much has happened around the world & it’s truly amazing when you see how the human race constantly evolves and how we bond together towards progress. Change isn’t easy, but if it is for the better, why not?

This year saw me take 9 months off not just work (i.e. magic, illusions, escapology… which I love) but also my life here in Singapore; to travel the world and write a book.

Ever since I could remember, I’d always dreamt of being a writer. So when this perfect opportunity came, I knew it’d be foolish to refuse. A motto I firmly believe in… is to live life without regrets and let fear cripple you.

Adventures Of 2 Girls, co-written with my best-friend, radio DJ Pam Ho, will be published in July 2012 by Marshall Cavendish International Asia 🙂 Do look out for our book!

We traveled all around the world, experiencing new things (caving in South Africa, sky-diving in Hawaii, trekking in Bhutan, etc), making new friends and so much more. My wish for this book project, is to simply inspire more people… that nothing is impossible.

This is our 2 full-page exclusive on SPH’s The New Paper, which came out a couple of days ago:

Work has been crazy non-stop hectic after coming back from my travels. But after being out of Singapore for almost a year, I feel really refreshed, coming back in the scene! It’s like almost looking at things with in a new, clear perspective.

Filming for Sinema TV’s M for Magic season 2 aside, I remember being immersed with rehearsals for our Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde show, in France. We’re really proud to be contacted by the TV producers of this long running series (14 years and going really strong).

J C, Ade & I were flown up to Paris and interestingly… our check-in luggage went missing but thankfully, was eventually recovered. It was quite a comedy of errors, but I was pleasantly surprised my rusty elementary actually worked and our entire stint in Paris was more than pleasant.

Despite the tight time schedules, I managed to meet my dearest Le Cordon Bleu classmate, Denise, and also brought Ade & JC to one of my fave spots in Paris (where I lived in for 3 months during my stint at the world’s most famous culinary school) …the gorgeous Notre Dame de Paris. There, we were actually recognized by Singaporean tourists. Quite surreal indeed. Haha.

Anyway. Our taping for NYE of Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde went very well, and it will be released this evening. The TV producers really loved our unique “360 Sawing” illusion & we’ve been asked back in 2012! I’m really excited 🙂 More on that later.

2012 seems very, very promising… And I’m super thrilled about it. There’s going to be lots of traveling (woo-hoo!) and involvements in very interesting TV projects, plus something VERY special which I’ll share with you once it’s been inked *wink* No hints for now, sorry. *grin*

By the way, if you didn’t know… The Mind Heist, our 9th mega illusion, happens on 7 Jan 2012. Click here if you’d like to be a part of the 100 lucky ones to have their minds read in this never-been-done-before world record stunt! The Singapore Book of Records & International Brotherhood of Magicians will be officiating this one-off event. So! Join us and make history, ok?

What’s really cool is that Mr. Vanni Pule, the International President (2011-2012) of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, actually made us a video. The man is a real sweetheart 🙂

It’s very touching that we have so many people worldwide who are super supportive of our efforts, though we come from a tiny island city. You can catch this official video online, or here:

The Mind Heist is going to be the toughest mega illusion yet. I mean, our first world record, which was for the most number of illusion (15) in five minutes, was much easier in the context that it was something my team & I could train our best for. But for this… well… it’s me, JC and a 100 people.

Obviously, a lot of things can potentially go wrong. I don’t even wanna start, and did I mention that this event will be broadcast ‘live’ online?!?! Ack. But anyway. We’re really want to put our country on the world magic map & do Singapore proud, so we’d do our utmost best… There’s already quite some media covering The Mind Heist. So let’s all hope for the best 😉

Oh right… I forgot to tell you. I made my virgin “directorial debut” with a couple of really short films made with my ever-suffering teammates. Haha. Do check it out and feel free to comment 😉 Crank up your sound speakers and enjoy my homage to campy B-grade movies with cheesy CG-I effects… Go ahead, watch it. I’ll wait right here 🙂

…Welcome back. How was it?

I hope my wacky little videos certainly put a smile on your face… We sure had fun shooting these hilarious stress relievers during breaks in-between work and after. Those closest to me all know that I never take myself seriously, I’m a ham that way.

Perhaps now’s the time to set the usual disclaimers that no magicians or venues were damaged during the making of these three short home movies. Heh heh heh.

Here’s sincerely wishing you the very best for the 2012, may the New Year be your very best one yet. Don’t forget to catch us on tonight’s NYE special of Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde’s show, available worldwide on TV5 or TV Monde, as long as you have cable.

I wonder if you make New Year resolutions. Most people don’t bother to, since it goes in one (y)ear and then out the other. However! One resolution I’ve made is to blog more in 2012; not an easy feat since I’m doing my usual Libra balancing thing of juggling work and writing my book since the manuscript has to reach my publisher by March. Did I tell you my laptop got stolen in Madagascar? I feel like I’m back in school all over again. “…But the lemurs took my homework.” Like hell, my publishers would believe that.

Anyway. Enjoy your NYE party countdown, wherever you may be… And have a smashing 2012. HUGS & KISSES!!!!

New World Record: Reading 100 minds in 1 sitting

Hey folks, what’s new? My newly layered short hair with shades of electric purple aside, this is the hottest magic news in this part of the world 😉

The Mind Heist – our 9th mega illusion and the latest one to date, will be the most challenging psychological illusion that J C & I have attempted yet, for obvious reasons…

In this ultimate social magic experiment, J C & I will attempt to read the minds of 100 different people in 1 sitting. The International Brotherhood of Magicians & Singapore Book of Records will be present at the venue to officially adjudicate this never-been-done-before event.

Here’s the official trailer we filmed at Sinema Old School, just 2 days after I touched down in Singapore after traveling the world for 9 months.

This exciting new world record stunt happens on 7 Jan 2012 at Sinema Old School located at11B Mt Sophia. Interestingly, this exact venue was where my old school (no pun intended) used to be. Methodist Girls School originally occupied the very same grounds, so this will be pretty nostalgic 😉

Oh, did I mention about the ‘live’ streaming of The Mind Heist yet? That’s right, people from all over the world can witness the groundbreaking event being broadcast free online.  For the various timing at different time zones, as well as, full event details, click here.

And! If YOU want YOUR MIND to be read by us in this historic event, click here now to participate. Fill in the online form and we may just contact you 😉 Spread the word about it!

Celebrating 5 years: ‘Magic Babe’ Ning & J C Sum’s limited edition Pentad Deck!

2 years in the making, our exclusive “Pentad Deck” is now here! These cards are on a limited edition run & will not be reprinted once they’re sold out. International magic supplier, Murphys Magic, carries them so you can easily order your “Pentad Deck” from your favorite magic shop!

Alternatively, you may also purchase your cards directly from us at Magic Boutique; we do autographs upon requests 🙂 Click on the link for more details!

These Gemaco® casino quality poker-sized cards are printed in the U.S.A. on fine European paper stock and features regular faces. Each “Pentad Deck” also includes an extra blank-face card. The deck is encased in an all-silver tuck case with a clear front window that shows off the full color playing card back design.

Special kudos to our Japan-based manga artist Eldred, photographer Bernard Sim & graphic designer Matt for their input too! 🙂

J C & I are super thrilled that our limited edition “Pentad Decks” are simply flying off the shelves and according to Murphys Magic, more than a hundred sets of our “Pentad Decks” were sold just overnight. Woot!!!

As you may have read, “Pentad” is the classical Greek Pythagorean term used for the quantity of five and also refers to a period of five years. So our “Pentad Deck” basically commemorates our half-decade of J C & yours truly’s magical partnership. However, there’s more to it…

I personally love the deeper meaning of “Pentad” and when time allows, do read this interesting essay, which gives a brief insight on Pythagoras and the mystery of numbers. The “Pentad” is a powerful symbol with a rich history. It was used by mysterious Greek cults of old, as well as, the earlier Christians to represent the 5 sacred wounds of Jesus Christ (his hands, feet and side).

Righty, I should stop all this geeky babble… but history and mythology simply fascinates! Anyway, thank you so much for your support all these years. More to come because…….

Tomorrow we will officially announce our 9th mega illusion! Stay tuned to this blog &

My favorite Magic Wand, ever!!!

As some of you may know, a quirky hobby of mine is collecting magic wands. Like the old-school top hat, distinguished wands represent a legacy of magic. My humble collection consists of wooden wands, plastic wands, Harry Potter wands… and even stylized wands that could “magically” blast light out from it’s tip, that I created and soldiered myself!

All that said, some wands don’t last. I’ve bought locally crafted wooden wands that start to warp and bend after some time, because the makers didn’t treat the wood properly… plus the high humidity and heat here in sunny Singapore really doesn’t help.

That’s why I was particularly impressed with the supremely well-made magic wands Michael Myatt of USA personally handcrafts. For his popular 2-part wands, Michael usually works with high-quality wood and metal but the special wand he made for me is a wildly gorgeous hot pink acrylic with beautiful white swirls, complete with elegant black tips.

It was love at first sight 🙂 I really love my exotic looking wand… Thank you Michael!

Magicians and wand collectors really ought to check out his website, Moonlight Magic Productions. Michael and his team of other talented artisans also make matching coin boxes and other interesting accessories. IMHO, the pictures don’t do the actual products justice. IT’s obvious to me that the folks at Moonlight Magic are a passionate bunch who do their work with pride.

I recently used my brand new wand as a magic prop in the recent cover photoshoot for Guardian magazine (due out in Jan 2012) and even the photographer & stylist were commenting on how stylish it looked! They fitted me into a gorgeous pink dress from a UK designer, and here’s me playing Tinkerbell. Hee hee.

I’ll blog more about the magazine cover photo shoot in a bit… It hits all Guardian outlets nationwide in Jan 2012, and there’s apparently going to be a lifesize cut-out of me too! Now if I can only make my “clones” multi-task so I can chillax! Haha… Click here for pictures J C took while at the cover photo shoot.

Ta for now, more later!

The Magic Pilgrim is back…

HELLO WORLD!!!!! Namaste! Bonjour! Kuzu zangpo! Aloha! Assalamou Alykoum! Ciao! Tsonga!

These are just a handful of greetings I’d learnt during my 9 non-stop months of constant traveling for a book project with the BFF; we certainly had many adventures together – some funny, others nerve-wrecking, but what doesn’t kill you certainly makes you stronger (like learning never to store your trusty laptop with all your written drafts in your check-in luggage in Madagascar).

Pam & I really both missed our loved ones in Singapore, it’s not easy when people you care about are miles away, so I’m truly glad to be finally back HOME because truly, there’s just no other place quite like it 🙂

Reflectively, I know I’ve certainly changed a lot during the time away from home. It’s been an insightful inner journey for me too, not just a physical one. The girl whose blog you’re reading, is no longer the same person who left 9 months ago. I am grateful for the many “teachers” I’ve met along the way, who have so generously taught me in their own ways, how to open my heart and live… not just to merely exist.

Our book chronicals the adventures of two BFFs (Best Friends Forever) comes out next year just before Christmas, so do look out for it 🙂 International literary giant, Marshall Cavendish International (Asia), is our publisher.

Honestly, I’m really excited because ever since I was a child, I’d dreamt of being a writer… much like one of my favorite women authors Anais Nin, who cleverly stated that “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection.”

So like everything else that I’m passionate about in my life, this Libra girl is going to make sure she does her very best and balances everything on her plate well. And geez, is it one big heavy plate!

Coming back to my 2nd home, the Concept:Magic studio, was comforting despite already knowing what’s in store for me for the next quarter and a half 🙂 I’d just touched down yesterday in Changi International Airport, and this morning already saw me engaging in intensive rehearsals for…

*brace yourselves*

…Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde!!!!

Yes, my stage partner J C Sum & I with our team will be flying to Paris next week for the TV taping of the popular French magic gala show, which broadcasts in all French speaking countries and then some. Our episode screens on New Year’s Eve, and those with cable in Singapore can also tune in to watch it on TV5 Monde!

It certainly is a great honor, and I’m deeply grateful and humbled to be one half of the performing team that can make Singapore proud since this is the first time the producers of this long-running hit magic television show has arranged for Singaporean local talent over! Truly, I hope our country will have the opportunity to have more homegrown magic stars over in the near future… We’re really much more than just a little red dot 😉

Anyway, do stay tuned to our blogs, ‘cos J C & I have more super exciting news to share with all of y’all very soon. There’s some truly cool magic projects we have that once again, we really hope to infuse more positive power to our local performing community and empower more up-and-coming magicians/ enthusiasts.

Ta for now, more later!

Back and so ready to rock, roll, teleport and then some…
