The Merlin Awards 2009!

I’m still getting used to the new blog interface, so thanks for bearing with me in the meantime as I sort out the tech kinks and stuff. Thanks so much for the kind words and comments thus far – you know I love to hear your suggestions, so keep them coming 🙂

Yesterday was an awesome TGIF… if you’re on our J C Sum & ‘Magic Babe’ Ning Facebook fan page, you’d been personally informed first on the breaking news that…

We’ve just been awarded the coveted Merlin Awards for “Most Original Illusionists 2009” …Woohoo!!!!

The Merlin Award is essentially the magic equivalent of what the Oscars is to film. It is the most prestigious award in magic from the International Magicians Society, the largest magic organization in the world.

I’m deeply honored and thrilled because it’s not a magic competition award which judges one’s performance on a particular day/ setting, but strictly a vote of peer recognition from the prestigious international body. As described in the official IMS website:

Every three years, the International Magicians Society hosts a banquet dinner, where those magicians who have acheived the highest level in their craft are awarded the coveted Merlin Award.

The voting members begin with approximately one hundred names and narrows down to a handful. The criteria that the voting members consider are talent, showmanship, originality, skills, and above all the rare ability to entertain under any conditions.

Past Merlin Award winners include magic legends like the late Harry Blackstone and Doug Henning… as well as, contemporary magic celebrities such as David Copperfield, Criss Angel, Siegfried & Roy and Penn & Teller.

J C & I are the very first Singaporean illusionists to receive this prestigious award, in recognition of all our work and putting Singapore on the world magic map.

Respectively, we’re awarded the “Most Original Illusionist 2009” and “Most Original Female Illusionist 2009”.  As you know, my onstage partner is one heck of a genius in illusion design, and we use lots of his clever original creations in our performances & mega magic projects.

Our modern ‘urban illusions in the city’ style and approach, as well as, our distinct one-of-a-kind partnership on stage has also been noted by media here and overseas as a refreshing change, with (yours truly) Magic Babe being a feisty equal with her unapologetic attitude and toys like Japanese twin sai daggers, katana swords, fire pois, fire bo staff, and more.

To be honest, my stage persona (of a gorgeous kickass chick who does wicked magic and escape) took some time to finally “get there”, a process that most folks may not realize because similarly, a vast majority of people would also assume that suave and charming Copperfield & sexy rock god Criss Angel have always been the way they are since… forever *wry grin* That’s professional show business for you, my dear!

Anyways, the award ceremony happens this early October, with Mr Tony Hassini, World President Chairman/ CEO of the International Magicians Society specially flying down to Singapore to present us our individual statues! He’s such a darling gentleman, working around our crazy schedules like that – we all can’t wait to meet him!

The Merlin Award statues are very lovely… you can see pictures of these classy, beautiful golden awards at the official IMS website, or read J C’s blog Backstage Business for his thoughts about the whole thing.

PS: As a big THANK YOU for all your wonderful love and awesomeness support, our Facebook fans will have the priviledge of being the first to win invites for this exclusive event. So, join us now by clicking here! 🙂
