Reflections on The Alchemist

Having finished the wonderful book by Paulo Coelho, I now understand why it has been translated into 56 languages, and has sold more than 65 million copies in more than 150 countries & it is one of the best-selling books in history.

Gosh. To be completely honest, I’m filled with a sense of calm and happiness & was practically glowing after reading The Alchemist This book is definitely one of those gems I’ll go back to once again. I seriously recommend this to anyone and everyone.

It’s really all about having the courage of following your heart and fulfilling your dreams. Everyone has a personal legend and it’s an adventure which only you can face and complete. The book is about hope and destiny, luck and love, fate and goodness, the heart and God…

In essence, it’s very good stuff because you can learn so much from it. Here are some of my favorite lines from the book:

One is loved because one is loved.  No reason is needed for loving.  – page 128.

Wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure.  – page 128.

People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them.  – page 130

It’s [your Personal Legend] what you have always wanted to accomplish.  Everyone, when they are young, knows what their Personal Legend is.  At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible.  They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives.  But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their Personal Legend.  – page 22.

No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn’t know it.

A cloud does not know why it moves in just such a direction and at such speed. It feels an impulsion … this is the place to go now. But the sky knows the reasons and the patterns behind all clouds, and you will know, too, when you lift yourself high enough to see beyond the horizons.

and also…

When you know [the Universal Language], it’s easy to understand that someone in the world awaits you, whether it’s in the middle of the desert or in some great city.  And when two such people encounter each other, and their eyes meet, the past and the future become unimportant.  There is only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only.  It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world.  Without such love, one’s dreams would have no meaning.  – page 98

Yes I’m still a sucker for Plato’s soulmate theory. And I’ll always be.

Anyways, I found Jason Wade’s version of You Belong To Me, to be such an apt companion on the speakers as I slowly enjoyed the pages of the book. Click on the box above to listen to this rendition which is different from Joni Mitchel’s/ Bob Dylan’s/ Carla Bruni’s/ etc. etc. etc

The lyrics are pure visual poetry…

See the pyramids around the Nile
Watch the sun rise
From the tropic isle
Just remember darling
All the while
You belong to me
See the market place
In old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember
When a dream appears
You belong to me

And I’ll be so alone without you
Maybe you’ll be lonesome too

Fly the ocean
In a silver plane
See the jungle
When it’s wet with rain
Just remember till
You’re home again
You belong to me

Oh I’ll be so alone without you
Maybe you’ll be lonesome too

Fly the ocean
In a silver plane
See the jungle
When it’s wet with rain
Just remember till
You’re home again
You belong to me
