Kids hate clowns, research shows

You might have already read about this quirky topic on the newspapers quite recently but I just had to blog about it. Seriously, for the longest time since I was a little girl, I always thought I was a bit of a freak for being reaaaaaally affected by clowns simply because they look so sinisterly creepy and garish and not at all funny to me.

Just when I thought I was all alone in this, scientific researchers in coulrophobia (the scientifically correct name of clownophobia) have already proven that this morbid fear of clowns is actually a lot more common than initially thought of! Kids (of today) actually are terrified of clowns, dislike clown themed parties and hate clown themed hospitals wards! They aren’t the only ones uncomfortable with clowns and their antics… this actually affects teenagers & adults as well!

According to news.com.au:

From correspondents in London

BAD news for Coco and Blinko – British children don’t like clowns and even older kids are scared of them.

The news that will no doubt have clowns shedding tears was revealed in a poll of youngsters by researchers from the University of Sheffield who examined how to improve the decor of children’s wards in hospitals.

The study, reported in the Nursing Standard magazine, found all of the 250 patients aged between four and 16 they quizzed disliked the use of clowns, with even the older ones finding them scary.

"As adults we make assumptions about what works for children," said Penny Curtis, a senior lecturer in research at the university.
"We found that clowns are universally disliked by children. Some found them quite frightening and unknowable."

Right… I guess revelation of this study in particular isn’t good news for Bubbles the Clown, one of the more famous clowns around because of his kids show on BBC. I’m really not exaggerating about how their ghastly white faces and bulbous red noses actually make some people uncomfortable. A picture speaks a thousand words:

This is so not a happy look of love…

Neither is this…

…Adults not withstanding…

You can almost feel the ‘love’ *wry grin* The little girl looks so scared and distrustful! She appears to have that silent and fearful “OMG, please stay away from me” look on her face. Also, the grown-up doesn’t fare any better too. She’s got a look of wary suspicion on her face!

So, it really is true… Kids hate clowns, research shows. LOL!
