The Mind Heist: The Ultimate Social Magic Experiment

Happy 2012 everyone!

I trust you’re having a fantastic start to the year, with exciting possibilities and golden opportunities greeting you :) If you missed our NYE performance on Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde (France’s most popular variety show that’s been running for 14 years now and still going very strong), you can watch it here:

60 million viewers around the world tune into it and we’ve been asked to come back this year by the TV producers… Really awesome that we can make Singapore proud again! And speaking of which…

On the days leading up to The Mind Heist, I’ve been extremely strict with myself in all the necessarily preparations for this mind experiment happening this Saturday that sees J C & yours truly attempting to set a world record for reading the minds of 100 different people in 1 sitting.

So that means more healthy food with lots of water, more meditation, more yoga and absolutely no alcohol, no late nights and no sex (I just leave that space blank on application forms).

As I poke on my keyboard, I have to admit that I’m feeling completely whacked out and exhausted. Don’t get me wrong now. This girl is still deeply excited about this never-been-done-before stunt which will take place at Sinema Old School. It’s just the mental and physical fatigue from all the intensive mind training, that’s getting to me.

However, I’ll definitely do my utmost BEST, simply because I want to do my country proud & I don’t believe in making excuses. You know… It’s incredible but us two Singaporeans, received the sincere blessings from Mr Vanni Pule, international president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Sign ups online for The Mind Heist have been encouraging, though plenty of people shared that they were highly afraid of getting their thoughts read by us, but were content to simply witness our mind heisting process. Hmph. Wusses!!! ;)

But seriously, I’m deeply moved and very appreciative of all the sincere support we’ve got from people not just here in Singapore, but from all over the world too… from Taiwan, to France, England, America, Australia, Spain, India, Canada, Israel, Malaysia, Middle East… it’s extremely touching! THANK YOU EVERYONE :) The event as you know, will be streamed live on the internet in real time, so anyone anywhere will be able to join in!

The media (magic and mainstream) has also been nothing but super with event pre-publicity for The Mind Heist. In fact, several have even arranged for their plucky reporters to be part of the 100 in this mind experiment.

Just yesterday, we were on 987FM’s highly popular Muttons on the Move, with radio DJs Justin Ang & Vernon A:

If you missed us on the airwaves yesterday, here’s the video of us mind-heisting both JA & Vernon in the 987FM studio!

We’re also featured in an exclusive interview on the OMY lifestyle news portal:

As well as, on 4-pages of popular online news and entertainment portal, xinMSN:

ShinMin Daily News also published our story on their newspaper:

We were meant to be on 91.3FM this morning but our dear friend radio DJ Rod Monteiro was rushed to the hospital yesterday after getting a mild stroke while on air. Highly unexpected and very worrying, because Rod is such an active sporty guy. It’s shocking for me because I was just texting my friend yesterday. Please pray for his speedy recovery!

Oh yes…

J C & I will be on Channel News Asia‘s AMlive on Friday 8AM, so do tune in. Something very wicked this way comes ;) And prior to that, we’ll be on Class95’s CarTunes with popular radio DJs Jean Danker & Bobby Tonelli at 6:30pm tomorrow (Thursday). Also, look out for our exclusive interview in the TODAY newspaper coming out very shortly.

A shout out of thanks to our friend Nicholas Chee, founder of Sinema Old School, for this picture taken with his smart phone. They’ve completely dressed up the place for us, mucho kudos to the passionate Sinema TV team.

We’re gonna make history this Saturday, Singapore!!!

Happy birthday JC!

…Actually JC’s birthday is tomorrow, but you can start wishing him Happy Birthday here! I’m certain he’d be both eqully bashful and thankful for all your birthday greetings and wishes *grin*

The bunch of us gave our dear TF fan-boy a surprise “Transformer themed” birthday celebration in the office yesterday, since he’s such a huge Optimus Prime fan.

Here’s some pictures taken yesterday at the Concept:Magic studios…

Ahahaha… Okay, the Optimus Prime birthday cake is pretty darn cool in a happy TF geek kinda way. It tasted yummy too! I had 2 generous slices and really enjoyed it *yums*

(Yes, this girl EATS. I’ve always advocated positive self image because I think it’s important and I’m not one of those who think a girl’s gotta starve and stay skinny. That’s just complete BS. One should just be happy and healthy.)

In a few hours, J C & yours truly will be on 987FM with the Muttons. Do tune in at 3pm for our ‘live’ radio interview with the wackiest DJs on popular English radio station!

Say HI if you happen to be in town near or at SCAPE, where the 987 radio station’s located! Don’t be a stranger ;)

Us with our friends, 987 DJs Vernon & Justin (aka The Muttons) last October :)

By the way, don’t forget to take part in the on-going Facebook contest here, where you get to win some pretty fabulous prizes from yours truly… a LG Optimus One android smartphone, an official I ♥ MUSEUMS tee, and a mystery prize! GOOD LUCK!

Win ‘Magic Babe’ Ning’s LG Optimus One smartphone + her “I ♥ MUSEUMS” tee-shirt + a mystery prize!

Hey peeps! How’s it going? :)

Happy TGIF! It’s been a fabulous week thus far and last evening saw us perform our brand of magic for an illusion gig at Singapore’s new Integrated Resort, Marina Bay Sands!

I  really enjoyed myself and most importantly, so did our audience *grin* Check out J C’s blog Backstage Business, he may be blogging about it soon!

My onstage partner recently did a blog post with pictures, a teaser of what to expect for our 8th mega illusion, THE AERIAL EXIT happening real soon this 12 Dec 2010 @ the Asian Civilisation Museum, 5pm. Admission is free so come on down!

The National Heritage Board is choosing the five folks who will be experiencing this up-close-and-personal… Did you submit your entry to them online already? ;) It’s going to be something special, an experience of a lifetime!

Anyway, I’m blogging early this Friday AM because I wanted to share some really exciting good news with y’all that starts right now… today!

For our latest J C Sum & ‘Magic Babe’ Ning Facebook contest, we’ll be giving away the following:

My official “I ♥ MUSEUMS” tee-shirt (sorry, people not included)…

…a MYSTERY PRIZE that’s pretty darn cool, and…

…the latest android smartphone from LG, the Optimus One!

This is to THANK the super-duper awesome folks who have been so incredibly supportive (thank you, thank you, thank you… I LOVE YOU GUYS!) of me in the on-going LG Mobile Asia online event, where folks vote for their favorite LG ambassadors every day!

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Vote for yours truly, ‘Magic Babe’ Ning, as your favorite LG ambassador here by hitting the VOTE button for all my 3 “Life’s Good” entries daily! We’re currently in the second last week, with week 7 (next week) the last stretch before the results are announced!

Oh yeah… You have to be logged into Facebook first and “Like” the LGMobileAsia page to take part but I promise, it will only take you just 2 minutes! I know some folks gave feedback that the process is a bit confusing and tedious, but thanks so much for all your time and effort. I truly appreciate it ;)

2. Write a comment after you vote for each entry every day, so we know that you have voted. Basically you can vote 3x a day! Check the box that allows you to post what you comment on your Facebook wall too, so your friends know about it and hopefully they’d help spread da word too!

One funky bonus is that every week, the powers that be at LG pick one person who votes daily, and awards him/her with a mobile phone. So keep at it, you may just be in for an even sweeter surprise ;)

3. Hurry, voting ends midnight on 15 Dec 2010 (Singapore time) - so please spread the word, yours truly needs your votes because EVERY VOTE COUNTS! The winner for this JC Sum & ‘Magic Babe’ Ning Facebook contest will be selected on 23 Dec and will be contacted via Facebook to collect his/her sweeeeeeeeeeet prizes!

Here’s how we pick that one lucky winner for the prizes, consisting of the super cool mystery prize, my official museums tee and of course… the awesome LG Optimus One smartphone!:

This contest is open to everyone and anyone worldwide. One supporter who gives the most votes from 3 Dec 2010 till midnight of 15 Dec 2010 (as always, Singapore time) wins the three prizes as mentioned above. Should there be a tie of votes, a lucky draw will be done to pick the winner.

Easy peasy.

Click here for full info. Good luck!!! :) VOTE now for yours truly @ http://tinyurl.com/LGmagicbabening

Mucho kudos!

PS: Do tune in to Mediacorp Radio Station 987FM tomorrow (Saturday) at 3pm for our ‘live’ radio interview with The Muttons (our beloved friends, DJs Vernon & Justin)! If you happen to be around the area, pop by SCAPE (where 987’s studio is located) and say HI too! See ya then…

Radio/ Magic

Okaaaay, so there was some on-going media buzz about the magic drama being similar (or not) to us real life illusionists… see J C’s blog Backstage Business for all about The Illusionist. Uh, the recently ended Channel U television series, not the Hollywood flick starring Edward Norton.

J C’s written his thoughts about it and I haven’t blogged much about the subject simply because I’m quite impartial about it… I mean… TV is TV, life imitates art but art also imitates life. I think people are smart enough to form their own conclusions about things, and anyway, it’s after all, just entertainment. J C’s never made any accusations, but merely pointed out his own opinions, and it’s his blog anyway. He’s got every right.

My $0.02 is that I think it’s cool that Mediacorp TV’s interested in doing a Mandarin magic drama, and hired a local production company to put it all together. Their research writers must have had a field day :) IMHO, though I haven’t caught an episode because of my  hectic work schedule, I think it really rocks to have a strong female character like Ann Kok’s “Babe Yong” character who also does escapes and illusions :)

Personally, J C & I had a lot of fun working with Thomas Ong (“James Lee”) & Mei Xin (“Ming”) during The Illusionist magic segment for the annual Mediacorp Festival last year, when we were hired by Mediacorp to produce the stage performance bits for them. You saw the videos and pics!

Anyways, I hope the local production company’s got the ratings and response they want for the TV series, who knows… maybe there will be a Part 2! ;) The sequel could feature some loser-ish “competitors” of James Lee who try to pull him down, ALA crab mentality/ tall poppy syndrome ;) “Tio flame!”

One could be a two-faced magician who pretends to be cordial and gentlemanly but actually backstabs James and tries hard to bring him down, trying to give James a foul reputation by fueling untrue rumors about the guy just to feel better about himself because of professional jealousy as he’s extremely unhappy that he doesn’t get the recognition James has.

Another can be a bitter, ungrateful, angry, disgraced ex-disciple or 师兄 of James Lee who lies to the world (or just doesn’t give the whole truth) about the reasons why he was actually told by James Lee to leave years ago, because of unethical decisions the guy himself actually made.

And most importantly, there must be a fat evil clown who pretends to be nice and funny, but is actually very vengeful and black-hearted. He pretends to be James Lee and impersonates him online just to bring down his reputation – but gets found out after awhile because (surprise, surprise) karma always has a way of getting around!

Green with envy, the guys hate James Lee to death because of the illusionist’s stellar track record, fame and success… but they still strangely keep a very close watch on everything he does. And instead of improving themselves to  be better, the funny clique (like they always say – birds of a feather, flock together) try their best to smear James Lee’s reputation instead. But! Karma has a way of getting around, and irate people with bad intentions never ever win, because James Lee has people who look out for him and anyways, good always triumphs over evil – not just in real life but in TV serials too lah! :)

I know, I know… such crazy outlandish ideas huh? ;) I’m no television scriptwriter, so I’ll leave these creative ideas for the real pros *grin* It was fun to think up of such low-life nemesis for the fictional character of James Lee anyways!

:)

So yeah. I didn’t get to watch the finale episode of The Illusion on Channel U last night because I was actually at the Mediacorp Radio Awards *grin* I was there to support the BFF & my other DJ friends who were also nominated… Pamela Ho, Stanley Leong, Melanie Oliverio of 938LIVE; Jean Danker, Glenn Ong, Mark aka Flying Dutchman of Class 95; Ivy Tan & Dennis Chew of YES 933; Justin Ang & Vernon A aka The Muttons on 987 :)

Jean, Justin & Pam were SMSing me during the show and I must say that Justin (who was also with me at the Hall of Fame Awards at our Alma Mata earlier this year) can really multi-task, because he would reply me swiftly backstage and he was emcee-ing with Vernon! LOL…

As usual, the Muttons were stellar, and the pair was brilliant as the hosts for the evening. It’s always great to be on their show, they seriously are a fab duo. There’s just no one else like them :)

Here are some pictures from the evening… which by the way, are taken using my iPhone, so they aren’t very impressive as the hp camera has no zoom function plus I couldn’t wander around to play shutterbug. I spent the whole evening with my bum parked on the seat of my reserved seat arranged for me, and it was a tad weird and took some getting used to because the BFF & I traded places for once – she on stage and yours truly, ‘Magic Babe’ Ning, in the audience. LOL!

From my vantage point, I spy… the pretty BFF in her designer dress & her colls from 938LIVE make their appearance on stage on cue, and go to their assigned seats.

The hosts for the evening were the Muttons and they were wickedly hilarious with zany antics the whole night… ranging from snide digs at Fann Wong & Christopher Lee; Tiger Woods & Jack Neo; Ris Low and her condom ambassador-ship; the works!Everyone was howling with laughter…

Here’s the BFF, #1 on the 938LIVE voting screen… Her partner Stanley Leong, co-host of their “Livingroom” talkshow, received the award :) His brother also received the same award, of Most Popular DJ, for Lush 99.5

My darling friend Jean Danker won her first award after years in showbiz, having gotten the most number of votes for most popular DJ in Class 95 :) Irene Ang, who’s always been an inspiration, gave away the award for the English stations and as always, her antics and wisecracks made everyone laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh…

It was a happy night for the couple as Jean’s other half, Glenn, bagged the Media Personality of the Year award :) The Muttons bagged the same award for their station, 987 …and as expected, YES933’s Dennis Chew aka Aunty Lucy also won a special award. For more information, see Channel News Asia.

Congrats y’all!

Awards galore aside, the evening had various singing acts entertain us – folks from overseas who were having gigs here. Jason Castro from American Idol ended the evening with his lovely voice :) It was nice to be entertained, for a change…

In all, the entire event wrapped up only past 10PM, and the famished BFF grabbed hold of me & we went off for supper. That’s us doing a quick 自拍 on her camera just before heading into the elevator, down to the car park!

It was the BFF’s special night and I’m really proud of Pam… she may not have bagged an award from the evening, but she’d always be a radiant star in my eyes, with all the differences this amazing woman has made! You rock, BFF! :)

Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore): Hall of Fame

It was an absolute honor to be given this prestigious recognition by my Alma Mata. We were very well taken care of, given the best red carpet treatment and everything like personal assistants, bodyguards and our own buggy!

Haha… It was GREAT to be back!

Walking the red carpet

Paparazzi pix

J C's along for the ride...

Magic Babe, J C Sum, Jamie Yeo, The Muttons, Rai (of Jack & Rai fame), Ris Low, Fauzi the Celebrity Blogger & Utt!

I said OK to a special appearance earlier on, though I couldn't do my full show since there was a logistic issue but the AV folks for the event realised they gave me a bum wireless mic too late, so I had to use a handheld one instead... to be honest it was a tad stiffling, but the show goes on!

J C Sum plays assistant ;)

There was an on-going prize presentation & award ceremony after my short stint on stage. Jamie Yeo, yours truly & Justin Ang went up on stage later, to receive our “Hall of Fame” plaques from the lovely Miss Anita Kuan, Head of Film Media Studies :)

Justin & Jamie were from Mass Communications and yours truly, from FSV (Film, Sound & Video).

We were told to share about our time as students here at Ngee Ann Poly’s School of Film and Media Studies. Asked to describe ourselves way back then, Jamie said that she was a poseur. LOL. Me? I was definitely the nerd.

My grounding in film school prepared me for what I do today, because solid performance is all about clear communication, a good storyline and also daring to be unique.

987 DJ Justin & I were surprised to find out that we actually graduated the same year, but we never knew each other!

We were then presented our individual awards in the inaugural Ngee Ann Poly Hall of Fame. “Big Momma” Anita teased us individually too, good-naturedly, like how Jamie was chauffeured to school in a BMW, that it’s not just Justin’s personality that got bigger, and yours truly made her old lecturers disappear :P POOF!

Right after that, Justin, Jamie & I did a lucky draw on stage to select winners for the items we donated. My wood handcrafted Mikami magic wand (imported from Japan) went to a girl from an all girl’s school! :)

We were all ushered to the press call & closed-door reception after that and I really relished the air-con, a welcomed change from the local heat and humidity!

In fact, I was getting a drink when I found myself standing  next to Utt (looking as gorgeous as ever) and the cutie smiled and told me that my mom’s been telling him all about me. LOL! It’s a long and funny story which I’ll save for  another day ;)

After an hour plus of interviews and the works, we went back down. But just before we collected our cars, everyone took a group picture at the grand event tentage.

It was wonderful catching up with familiar faces from school, touching base with people in the local entertainment industry, and making new friends. Before J C & I left in our personal buggy to collect the car, we took a picture with Tanat (yep, I let the sweetie hold my plaque)… the patient sweetheart waited for us for hours!

I would truly like to thank EVERYONE who made it all possible. It’s amazing that it was mostly students who put the whole event together. I’m mighty impressed – You guys rock :)
