The Magic Pilgrim is back…

HELLO WORLD!!!!! Namaste! Bonjour! Kuzu zangpo! Aloha! Assalamou Alykoum! Ciao! Tsonga!

These are just a handful of greetings I’d learnt during my 9 non-stop months of constant traveling for a book project with the BFF; we certainly had many adventures together – some funny, others nerve-wrecking, but what doesn’t kill you certainly makes you stronger (like learning never to store your trusty laptop with all your written drafts in your check-in luggage in Madagascar).

Pam & I really both missed our loved ones in Singapore, it’s not easy when people you care about are miles away, so I’m truly glad to be finally back HOME because truly, there’s just no other place quite like it :)

Reflectively, I know I’ve certainly changed a lot during the time away from home. It’s been an insightful inner journey for me too, not just a physical one. The girl whose blog you’re reading, is no longer the same person who left 9 months ago. I am grateful for the many “teachers” I’ve met along the way, who have so generously taught me in their own ways, how to open my heart and live… not just to merely exist.

Our book chronicals the adventures of two BFFs (Best Friends Forever) comes out next year just before Christmas, so do look out for it :) International literary giant, Marshall Cavendish International (Asia), is our publisher.

Honestly, I’m really excited because ever since I was a child, I’d dreamt of being a writer… much like one of my favorite women authors Anais Nin, who cleverly stated that “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection.”

So like everything else that I’m passionate about in my life, this Libra girl is going to make sure she does her very best and balances everything on her plate well. And geez, is it one big heavy plate!

Coming back to my 2nd home, the Concept:Magic studio, was comforting despite already knowing what’s in store for me for the next quarter and a half :) I’d just touched down yesterday in Changi International Airport, and this morning already saw me engaging in intensive rehearsals for…

*brace yourselves*

…Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde!!!!

Yes, my stage partner J C Sum & I with our team will be flying to Paris next week for the TV taping of the popular French magic gala show, which broadcasts in all French speaking countries and then some. Our episode screens on New Year’s Eve, and those with cable in Singapore can also tune in to watch it on TV5 Monde!

It certainly is a great honor, and I’m deeply grateful and humbled to be one half of the performing team that can make Singapore proud since this is the first time the producers of this long-running hit magic television show has arranged for Singaporean local talent over! Truly, I hope our country will have the opportunity to have more homegrown magic stars over in the near future… We’re really much more than just a little red dot ;)

Anyway, do stay tuned to our blogs, ‘cos J C & I have more super exciting news to share with all of y’all very soon. There’s some truly cool magic projects we have that once again, we really hope to infuse more positive power to our local performing community and empower more up-and-coming magicians/ enthusiasts.

Ta for now, more later!

Back and so ready to rock, roll, teleport and then some…

  • It’s certainly been a blast and I’m really thankful for all the awesome support from the media, family, friends, industry partners, supporters and fans! :)

I’m truly happy that I can make my country proud… I do hope in the near future we’ll see more talented Singaporeans local talents coming out from the woodwork and more local talents getting recognition.

J C & yours truly at our Merlin Awards presentation (International Magicians Society) in 2009.

As you know, J C & I are the first Singaporean illusionists to receive the Merlin Awards, which are considered the Oscars of Magic.

Tony Hassini, President of IMS, specially flew down from New York to present the both of us our individual Merlin Awards at St James in 2009.

Past recipients include David Copperfield, Criss Angel and more recently this year, Lu Chen from Taiwan. I sincerely hope more Singaporean magicians can get it (or other forms of recognition for their work, milestones & track record) in future :)

As a professional commercial artiste whose job is to entertain, I love working closely with young talents because they have so much potential. We’ve very healthy numbers of magic hobbyists and enthusiasts, and the number of people becoming part/full-time magicians have increased in the last few years which is GREAT!

I received an email a little while back from someone who asked how long it’d take him (a relatively new magic newbie) to be able to teleport a car or people, like how J C  & I did for various nation-wide events, and for him to be famous & earn lots of money.

Well. Of course I’m in no position to suggest that passion should be his key motivation. But I did sincerely advise him to focus on his studies first, finish up his O-levels and at least get a University degree, while he pursues a career in magic.

I’ve always been an advocate of higher learning. A good education is always important, because knowledge is power. Obviously this also relates to not just books but financial literacy as well. It’s not a one way street.

    Anyways.

His reply to me was that he wanted to be the next J C Sum/ ‘Magic Babe’ Ning but wasn’t as rich as his classmate who was also a magician and who could afford nice cool props that cost hundreds of dollars because his parents gave him a credit card.

I shared with him my honest thoughts.

Having the best/ most expensive props in the world doesn’t make a better magician. A talented writer can still come up with a brilliant piece of work even if s/he uses a crappy ballpoint pen, compared to a wannabe who splashed out money on an expensive fountain pen. It’s all in YOU.

People like me & J C have what we have entirely through our own means – we worked our way up and nothing came easy. I never took a cent from my folks, though I was down to my last few bucks when I first joined Concept:Magic years back. I really just wanted to follow my heart.

In fact, J C’s flair for original illusion designs stemmed from the need for good practical magic props and illusions suitable for bread and butter work. And J C’s done tremendously well not just as a performer but also as an internationally-recognized contemporary illusion designer as well, with many people buying his plans and constructing his designs!

I personally take inspiration from today’s greats like Google, YouTube & Facebook. Their founders are young and have achieved so much because they’re completely in tune with today’s community. They never fail to keep innovating. It reminds me of my favorite quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

Everyone needs to start from somewhere.

But real life examples have clearly shown: if you’ve got the right X-factor, a fantastic USP (unique selling point), an all-original open mindset, besides having all the necessary skills required… you’ll definitely go far!

    16 days left to 2010…

    Heya folks, check it out!

    Razor TV‘s 2-parter is now up :)

Do watch Part 1 & Part 2 of our most recent mega illusion The Aerial Exit and don’t forget to rate and comment! Last Sunday, J C & I successfully vanished 5 people surrounded, 24 feet up in the air!

We were also on a bunch of other media and online websites:

    “新加坡魔術師高超技法 街上5路人瞬間消失”, Now News

    “星魔術師驚人幻術 5路人大街消失”, TVBS Taiwan

December is a really busy and exciting month for us, and we’re already getting so much work for early next year! A few see us traveling out of Singapore, but we’ll definitely update you guys ;)

It’s the middle of the very last month of 2010 and I’m starting to feel a little whimsical about things. I am very happy and grateful about a lot of things that happened this year.

I got to meet so many wonderful people, experience new things, explore different places and I have never felt more sure of myself, more sure of things, and more confident about my destiny and path in life.

Portrait of yours truly, by my artist friend Ocean Wang

Life isn’t about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself.

And I want a purpose-driven one, not a life where days are just frivolously squandered. Because it’s not how many years in your life that matter, but how much life there really is in those years you are given.

I turned 28 this October, an age where over a decade ago, I’d carefully written in my private journal that I’d earned a Masters or PhD, own a nice condo, drive a flashy car, written a book, had a cat or two, found the love of my life and having an established career.

Life is funny because I deviated so far away from the original plan, and I blossomed into Magic Babe. Fire-eating, escapology doing, illusion performing, magazine gracing, sexy looking magician who’s proud of being a Singaporean woman.

While I am not wealthy, I sincerely feel rich. I am loved and surrounded by wonderful friends and family who when I focus on making them happier and better, dissolve away all unhappiness.

And as difficult it can be, I try my best to follow the seemingly simple mottos I hold dear to my heart. One of my favorites which I’ve shared on my blog before, being:

I don’t usually make a New Year’s resolutions list but I’ll be compiling my bucket list before these 16 days are up.

Maybe you’d wanna make one too – what are the list of things (not just the important – but the crazy!) that you truly desire to do? Where are the places you’ve always wanted to go? Things to be learnt. Become. Experience. Start. Relish.

Life’s supposed to be an adventure. Are you stagnant or are you enjoying the journey? ;)

At midnight tonight, the on-going Magic Boutique mega sale, as well as, the LG Ambassador voting process will close.

I’d really like to thank everyone who’s been so incredibly supportive… From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

The LG Ambassador “Life’s Good” project has been going on for about 7 weeks and I truly wish to thank you for voting for me as your favorite LG Ambassador every day.

People have shared that the online voting process is time-consuming and not very straightforward, so I sincerely am very grateful for you spending time everyday to click on the VOTE buttons on all my entries.

We’re having an on-going thingy on Facebook, to thank supporters… You stand to get a couple of really cool things, inclusive of a LG Optimus One Smartphone and other things :)

Please note that this is completely separate from the one by LG where one lucky voter takes home a LG mobile phone every week! See the link above for full info!

The Magic Boutique Mega Sale has also been doing very well… I guess people are getting into the Christmas mood.

This has been our 3rd mega sale  of the year, and if the response continues to be good we’ll definitely carry on – I hope this answers questions we’ve been getting in email!

The Aerial Exit: My personal side of things…

Yesterday’s mega illusion was a success and we’ve been featured on TV, radio, print and online media… Thank you all, for your awesome support :)

I’m extremely thankful for my blessings, and that I’m able to make my country proud with our 8th mega illusion, The Aerial Exit, that saw J C & I successfully vanish 5 people 24 feet in the air!

To be honest, despite my seemingly calm exterior, my excited heart was really pounding loudly throughout on stage…

Something like this has never been done before because it’s such a complex mega illusion, but we wanted to do something original instead of rehashing “safe” classics because c’mon, everyone knows today’s savvy (and easily jaded) audience can find anything online and there’s also YouTube!

My friends and family came by to lend their tremendous support yesterday, and it was so good seeing them… I was really tickled as well, when I saw my closest bunch of friends sporting specially made “I ♥ MAGIC BABE” tees! Hahaha… here’s some pictures that the wonderful BFF took:

Part of the crowd waiting for us yesterday at ACM!

The Queenies (my darling University friends from RMIT) with their cute "I ♥ MAGIC BABE" t-shirts & tops!

JC & I when we first hit the stage... The dress is new by the way, it made its debut at The Aerial Exit *grin*

We did a simple illusion act, multiplying a $2 from an audience member into a real $50 note before giving it to her :) The crowd really loved it!

Introducing the cage where the 5 people will vanish after being elevated 24 feet in the air...

    2 magicians with 5 muggles...

The 5 participants looking very nervous as they'd never entered the cage and elevated into the air before...

Connecting everyone... 100.3FM DJ Xin Ying stood in the heart of the cage while the other 4 stood at the corners.

A curtain is raised around them to help the participants remain calm as they are raised 24 feet in the air

Flags are given for them to hold so people know the participants are all still inside. Xin Ying holds on to her mic since she will do a "5...4...3..2..1" countdown when they reach the maximum height in the air

As you've seen on Channel News Asia, the mega illusion was a success... all 5 people vanished, nothing left behind ;) Stay tuned for videos coming up. I think some folks in the audience have already twittered/ blogged/ uploaded it online!

As the members of the media surged forward to interview us, my friends made sure I noticed them *grin* It was so cute of them to make those “I ♥ MAGIC BABE” t-shirts specially for me :)

Spanky, Pam, Nats & Jasmine (Kris couldn't come because of work)

The BFF with my family... Apparently my dad asked Pam why he didn't get a "I ♥ MAGIC BABE" t-shirt! Hahahaha.

I was really happy to see my uncle & my folks :)

The "I ♥ MAGIC BABE" tees were Spanky's brilliant suggestion really...

Marie joined us too, with her hot date... hahaha

Of course I was really relieved everything went well – a mega illusion like this isn’t an easy feat to pull off but I work with a truly professional and passionate team who I know I can trust with my life. They’re like family :)

Our set-up the day before was marred a little by a sudden heavy downpour, which happened just wee moments after I texted my friend Irene that it was such a hot day and I was sweating! Seriously. God’s got a great sense of humor.

But the day of the big event went swell, weather wise. It was warm and humid yesterday, like any other typical sunny Singapore afternoon, but our crowd of a thousand plus fiercely braved the weather conditions to witness our 8th mega illusion :)

    I am thankful.

Earlier in the day, J C & I had a gig before The Aerial Exit, and it was so hot, I almost fainted :P It wasn’t just the heat and humidity that got to me, it was also because I missed breakfast and forgot that I didn’t have dinner because our set up at the venue ended really late and I came home around midnight.

Yes, it was irresponsible for me to forget my meals but it happens :( Don’t get me wrong – I’m not one to skip meals on purpose to stay skinny like how some people expect women to be stick thin. But when I’m focused with work, time just flies and I forget everything else. But luckily, I managed to get my sugar levels up in time, phew!

The magic team did a fantastic job and the participants enjoyed themselves in this experience of a lifetime (yes, we brought all of them back later – of course). The client (National Heritage Board) was very happy with the turnout and our mega illusion, and the crowd was elated – many even staying over an hour just for pictures & photos with us after J C  & I were done with the media interviews.

After strike down, I met up with the BFF, Jas, Spanky & Liew (my photography instructor who also came down to snap pictures) who were already done with dinner at Indochine. We drove out for dessert before heading home to crash. Yes, this girl is only human and needs her beauty sleep!

We’re out on quite a few media, like in popular newspaper Today for instance – I’ll blog about it once I find time to compile it all, there’s just so much to do right now… This is really our busiest season of the year.

Anyways, do check out JC’s blog Backstage Business for his side of the story – i.e. the whole technical & behind the scenes bits ;) My on-stage partner’s perspective is always different from mine, we’re like 2 sides of the same coin, so to speak. Check it out!

PS: For more event pictures, find us on Facebook!
