The Mind Heist: The Ultimate Social Magic Experiment

Happy 2012 everyone!

I trust you’re having a fantastic start to the year, with exciting possibilities and golden opportunities greeting you :) If you missed our NYE performance on Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde (France’s most popular variety show that’s been running for 14 years now and still going very strong), you can watch it here:

60 million viewers around the world tune into it and we’ve been asked to come back this year by the TV producers… Really awesome that we can make Singapore proud again! And speaking of which…

On the days leading up to The Mind Heist, I’ve been extremely strict with myself in all the necessarily preparations for this mind experiment happening this Saturday that sees J C & yours truly attempting to set a world record for reading the minds of 100 different people in 1 sitting.

So that means more healthy food with lots of water, more meditation, more yoga and absolutely no alcohol, no late nights and no sex (I just leave that space blank on application forms).

As I poke on my keyboard, I have to admit that I’m feeling completely whacked out and exhausted. Don’t get me wrong now. This girl is still deeply excited about this never-been-done-before stunt which will take place at Sinema Old School. It’s just the mental and physical fatigue from all the intensive mind training, that’s getting to me.

However, I’ll definitely do my utmost BEST, simply because I want to do my country proud & I don’t believe in making excuses. You know… It’s incredible but us two Singaporeans, received the sincere blessings from Mr Vanni Pule, international president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Sign ups online for The Mind Heist have been encouraging, though plenty of people shared that they were highly afraid of getting their thoughts read by us, but were content to simply witness our mind heisting process. Hmph. Wusses!!! ;)

But seriously, I’m deeply moved and very appreciative of all the sincere support we’ve got from people not just here in Singapore, but from all over the world too… from Taiwan, to France, England, America, Australia, Spain, India, Canada, Israel, Malaysia, Middle East… it’s extremely touching! THANK YOU EVERYONE :) The event as you know, will be streamed live on the internet in real time, so anyone anywhere will be able to join in!

The media (magic and mainstream) has also been nothing but super with event pre-publicity for The Mind Heist. In fact, several have even arranged for their plucky reporters to be part of the 100 in this mind experiment.

Just yesterday, we were on 987FM’s highly popular Muttons on the Move, with radio DJs Justin Ang & Vernon A:

If you missed us on the airwaves yesterday, here’s the video of us mind-heisting both JA & Vernon in the 987FM studio!

We’re also featured in an exclusive interview on the OMY lifestyle news portal:

As well as, on 4-pages of popular online news and entertainment portal, xinMSN:

ShinMin Daily News also published our story on their newspaper:

We were meant to be on 91.3FM this morning but our dear friend radio DJ Rod Monteiro was rushed to the hospital yesterday after getting a mild stroke while on air. Highly unexpected and very worrying, because Rod is such an active sporty guy. It’s shocking for me because I was just texting my friend yesterday. Please pray for his speedy recovery!

Oh yes…

J C & I will be on Channel News Asia‘s AMlive on Friday 8AM, so do tune in. Something very wicked this way comes ;) And prior to that, we’ll be on Class95′s CarTunes with popular radio DJs Jean Danker & Bobby Tonelli at 6:30pm tomorrow (Thursday). Also, look out for our exclusive interview in the TODAY newspaper coming out very shortly.

A shout out of thanks to our friend Nicholas Chee, founder of Sinema Old School, for this picture taken with his smart phone. They’ve completely dressed up the place for us, mucho kudos to the passionate Sinema TV team.

We’re gonna make history this Saturday, Singapore!!!

Thank Yous & Consolations…

A short quickie before I go “poof!”:

1) I just completed the last of my Diploma in French studies (Diplôme d’études en langue française) exams and the last part was quite the funny disaster! My written paper went okay but for the private oral bit with the jury, I tripped up with my second section.

Did I tell you trip up? Well, it’s trip up AND fall flat on the face!!!!

The first section of the oral examination had you do a self-introduction for about 2 mins, before you talk about a given topic for about 3 mins, and the oral exam ends with a given roleplay interaction between you and the examiner for about 4 mins. Obviously everything has to be spoken in fluent French, as perfect as can be.

Somehow, I thought “colère” meant color. Needless to say, I was completely thrown off by the topic I was given – which had the word in there and just didn’t make sense to me.

The show must go on, so I started talking about stuff related to “colors”, evening throwing in a dramatic “la vie en rose” for effect… which only made the jury even more confused.

After a moment, the DELF jury kindly stopped me and read out the given topic again, slowly… to which I gave a defeated “Alors… desole mais, je ne comprends pas”. Turns out, “colère” isn’t “color”… but “anger”!

Ahahahahaha. Yes, colère = anger. Not color. Or tomato.

So basically, I totally screwed that part up big time and made a dunce out of myself but it was still okay. My oral examiner (she was greatly amused because we had started off so well!) actually smiled and kindly said “ça va” so I guess it’s still a-okay.

Our role play, which was assigned to me, was an interesting one. The topic had her play French actress Audrey Tatou (who’s now apparently in Singapore) and moi, a local reporter. I actually asked if she liked Geylang durians and spicy chilli crab. Heh.

Anyways. It was definitely an experience and despite the hilarious hiccups, I’m quite sure I’ll pass the DELFs anyway :)

In all, I’m glad I did my intensive three hour lessons at Alliance Francaise every early morning (trust me, it was a great struggle for this nocturnal creature of the night) and I met so many wonderful people, whom I will always forever be in their debt.

I’ll be featured in the next issue of Alliance Francaise’s LIEN, so look out for the fun interview in the magazine :)

2. A visually talented supporter took the time, effort and energy to create a fan-blog of sorts for me, as well as, a super cool ‘Magic Babe’ Ning desktop wall paper! It even has some updates of my upcoming events, like our 8th mega illusion, The Aerial Exit.

Gosh. It’s a really heart-melting surprise and cheered me up, making me smile… See http://www.ilovemagicbabe.blogspot.com

The specially made ‘Magic Babe’ Ning wallpaper consists of many of my favorite photos on Facebook (sorry, my account has been full after reaching the 5,000 max limit earlier this year, please add yourselves to the J C Sum & ‘Magic Babe’ Ning Facebook page instead) most of the pictures taken by my talented photographer and very good friend, Weili Chua:

I don’t now what I’ve done to deserve this lavish compliment, but I’m really touched and  honored… I think I’ll post this up tomorrow morning as one of the 3 entries for the on-going LG: Life’s Good online event.

Speaking of which…

3) It is the last week for you to vote for yours truly as your favorite LG ambassador. Thanks so much for your time and effort and tremendous support, you guys really rock :)

4) I’ve got a whole bunch of media interviews and photoshoots later, so do keep your eyes peeled for J C & yours truly in the local press ;)

But this evening, tune in to Class 95 at 6pm because we will be talking with DJs Jean Danker & Bobby Tonelli!

We’ll be at the Class 95 studios in a bit, chatting about all sorts of things, especially… our 8th mega illusion The Aerial Exit happening this Sunday @ 5pm at the Asian Civilization Museum.

My little Mongolian boy…

Gosh. Time really flies! :)

I just got my kiddo’s progress report and I’m thrilled that he’s the best pupil in his school and that his health is well. He looks a lot happier and healthier… Gunbileg has certainly grown a lot taller too!

My monthly contributions have helped provided him with warm winter jackets, clothes, nutritious food, regular health check-ups and supplements… besides proper sanitation, clean water and electricity… things that most people take for granted these days.

I’m sending him some items, amongst them a stack of stickers and temporary tattoos (apparently my little Mongolian tyke is big on Tom & Jerry cartoons), as well as, a tee-shirt that I thought looked pretty darn dashing. Haha. It’s like a tux of sorts, with bling bling all over!

Actually I’d love to send him more but World Vision has a policy that gifts can’t be bigger than a flat A4 envelope because they don’t want other kids (some don’t have sponsors) to get jealous. I’ve given him lots of stickers and things, so I hope he gets into the Christmas spirit and shares :P

Righty, in a few short hours I’ll be heading over to the Mint Museum of Toys to commence set-up for our 4 shows with the team. J C & myself will be performing our 20min sets at 2pm, 3pm, 4pm and the last one at 5pm. Tix will be available 45min before showtime.

Our shows today are specially designed for families and kids, and they’re free to the public. However the museum charges an entrance fee but saying I LOVE MUSEUMS at the ticketing counter gets you 40% off the regular prices ($15 for adults/ $7.50 for kids).

This is a special discount from the National Heritage Board during this Explore Singapore 2010 campaign! For full details, see the official website at http://museums.com.sg/es10/

I’m really looking forward to our gigs later today… it’s all brand new material and you can bet that it’s going to be a truly untypical kid’s show *grin* After our shows, we’ll be having meet & greets with fans and friends, so do say HI!

When all that’s over, I’ll be chilling out with the BFF since she’s scored us tix for WildRice’s latest play, Cinderellah! Should be fun. Tonight’s the gala premiere of the play and I’m looking forward to it. I love supporting good local talent. More on that later ;)

Wishing you guys an awesome weekend, folks!!! See ya in a bit!!!

PS: Don’t forget to vote for me as your favorite LG “Life’s Good” Ambassador today… LG picks one lucky voter every week to win a LG smartphone!

Vote for yours truly’s latest entries of the week at http://tinyurl.com/LGmagicbabening :)

THANK YOU!!!!

Cya at Mint Museum of Toys tomorrow!

Hey folks! :)

Time flies! It’s already Friday (TGIF!) …J C & I are reeeeeeally excited about tomorrow’s four shows at the Mint Museum of Toys, which we’ve specially designed for families and children.

I just got a really cute I LOVE MUSEUMS tshirt too (thanks to the nice folks of the National Heritage Board), so I’ll be wearing it tomorrow under my new jacket I just bought at lunch yesterday. It’s got a lovely Beatles “Sgt Pepper’s Lovely Hearts Band” theme going and that’s purrrrrrrrfect for the Mint Museum of Toys, since it’s all about vintage toys – the oldies but the goodies!

Our show times tomorrow are 2pm, 3pm, 4pm and 5pm - free show tickets available at counter 45mins before each show. The duration for each up-close-and-personal show is 20mins long.

Our shows are free for the public but the Mint Museum of Toys still charges an entry fee so don’t forget to say the magic words I LOVE MUSEUMS!!!! at the counter to enjoy a generous 40% off museum entrance fees.

The usual price for one adult is S$15 and for kids it’s S$7.50. The National Heritage Board is offering the special discount to the public only for this campaign :) So be sure to make full use of it!

Please come early to avoid disappointment. Last week saw a really packed crowd (full-house for all our performances at Pernanakan Museum!) and the venue management had to turn away disappointed folks because they were way over-capacity.

The queue for our shows were snaking up all the way to the upper floors of the venue and by 8:30pm, tickets for our 10pm show were all snapped up.

For more information, see the National Heritage Board’s official website for the EXPLORE SINGAPORE 2010 campaign here.

I’m really excited about tomorrow’s shows because we’ve done thousands of professional shows here and abroad over the years for corporate events and public shows where there’s children present but this Saturday’s shows will be starkly different because it’s really for kids in a close-up parlor setting.

Magic Babe is so going to be a ball of a time ;)

As the creative director of our kids edutainment company, I had lots of fun producing the shows for our talents of Mighty Magic Factory, giving creative input and the works… So now instead of being “backstage”, tomorrow will see me performing for the kids. Whee!

J C & I have been closely working on the performing material with Ade aka Kinetic Gal to get her professional advice on what really works with the savvy kids of today, since she performs shows for them almost every day :)

I firmly believe that the little men and little women of today hate nothing more than being treated as “unclever children”, especially how with current pop-culture, they mature and “grow up” a lot faster now! Like adults, they want to be treated with respect… like matured tweens even!

So… with all that in mind, J C & I will be performing a distinctly untraditional “kid’s magic show”. What we present tomorrow will be something kids will find completely different from what they’ve been exposed to before, from your typical kids birthday parties or public magic shows in shopping malls.

Righty, I gotta go back to our rehearsals… I look forward to seeing you tomorrow ;) Don’t be a stranger, we’d love to meet you at the end of the event, so come on over after. Ta for now, more later!

PS: Don’t forget to check out my latest vids and pix from last week’s shows! Vote for me as your favorite LG “Life’s Good” Ambassador & stand to win yourself a LG smartphone weekly! Please vote for all my entries at http://tinyurl.com/LGmagicbabening

You may vote for each entry once daily – the more you vote, the bigger your chances – just like Luis who recently won himself a brand new LG Optimus One.

Thanks for da support!!!! I really do appreciate it *grin* Despite all the unfair slime thrown at me by faceless douche bags who disagree with me or what I’ve worked so hard for, I feel really lucky that I’m surrounded by supportive friends and loved ones who radiate positive energy. Thank you my angels, you rock :)
