Happy snappy with my photography coach, Liew Tong Leng…

I had the happiest Boxing Day ever, spending the bulk of it taking pictures on my new camera with my talented photography teacher, Liew Tong Leng, who’s currently on Mediacorp TV’s on-going photography reality TV show “The Big Shot”.

We spent hours, taking photos from day till night, and I learnt so much from this very talented shutterbug. Here’s a little taste of some pictures that Liew has taken right here in Singapore… Do note that copyright belongs to him, so please do not misuse his IP:

Liew is an excellent teacher. I learnt so much from him! Back in film school, I did take a module in photography but Liew isn’t just technically sound, he truly has the eye and is so talented in photography, it impresses me how humble and patient he is really… the BFF & I really enjoyed our sessions with him.

Chatting about photography on our walk back to where we parked our cars after a full day out on the shoot, Liew shared that he learnt some insights from another award-winning photographer… Steve McCurry (one of my favorite photographers ever), who I’d blogged about a little while back…

You’ve seen works by Steve McCurry before. For instance, the iconic Afghan Girl in TIME magazine. So anyway. Liew was sharing with Pam & I that he was having dinner with Steve McCurry when he was in Singapore for his “Unguarded Moment” exhibition at ACM (which I so totally loved!) and they were talking. Liew reflected on he advice McCurry gave him and condensed it as such:

1) Know how to stand out from the rest, to be special in people’s eyes

2) When you do that, and your work is solid, you’ll win over people’s hearts

Liew gave current examples and instances on how he basically thought outside the box, doing alternative things during “The Big Shot” where other competing photographers did very nice and professional but rather typical pictures for the given themes, while he stood out because his pictures were refreshingly different so that impressed the judges.

Photography and magic aren’t too different afterall *grin* I know, I know, I’m a magic geek for seeing this relation but it is true! It’s also the reason why people like J C Sum (you know, the guy I work with) are where they are today.

He’s also wise enough to know when to let go of certain acts, like his beautiful floating table routine for instance – J C was the very first Singaporean to perform the stage magic act years ago but since many magicians started performing it here… some badly, some using pirated props… J C stopped doing it and worked with other illusions, besides creating his own 🙂

Back to photography. Besides all the technical stuff that can frazzle your nerves because of the aperture calculations and all, I was also reminded that it’s an art – so one has to be patient, act fast, look at things from all perspectives and when it calls for it, dare seize opportunities.

Anyway. ‘Magic Babe’ Ning is no Liew Tong Leng or Steve McCurry, but I was still quite pleased with what I went home with. Mind you, these pictures were taken using a compact point and shoot camera & no photoshop was used!

For the night shot, I used a camera tripod for the long exposure, and love the effect of the light reflection on the Singapore River 🙂 There’s more pictures, but you can see them on Facebook.

If you’d like to check out more of Liew’s spectacular pictures, sign up for his photography courses or book him to take beautiful pictures for you – find him at liewtl.multiply.com

I understand that he’s going to launch a brand new website for next year, so stay tuned for that 😉 Meanwhile, don’t forget to catch the last episode of Mediacorp TV’s “The Big Shot” next week… will Liew win the grand prize? I’m definitely rooting for him!!!!

My little Mongolian boy…

Gosh. Time really flies! 🙂

I just got my kiddo’s progress report and I’m thrilled that he’s the best pupil in his school and that his health is well. He looks a lot happier and healthier… Gunbileg has certainly grown a lot taller too!

My monthly contributions have helped provided him with warm winter jackets, clothes, nutritious food, regular health check-ups and supplements… besides proper sanitation, clean water and electricity… things that most people take for granted these days.

I’m sending him some items, amongst them a stack of stickers and temporary tattoos (apparently my little Mongolian tyke is big on Tom & Jerry cartoons), as well as, a tee-shirt that I thought looked pretty darn dashing. Haha. It’s like a tux of sorts, with bling bling all over!

Actually I’d love to send him more but World Vision has a policy that gifts can’t be bigger than a flat A4 envelope because they don’t want other kids (some don’t have sponsors) to get jealous. I’ve given him lots of stickers and things, so I hope he gets into the Christmas spirit and shares 😛

Righty, in a few short hours I’ll be heading over to the Mint Museum of Toys to commence set-up for our 4 shows with the team. J C & myself will be performing our 20min sets at 2pm, 3pm, 4pm and the last one at 5pm. Tix will be available 45min before showtime.

Our shows today are specially designed for families and kids, and they’re free to the public. However the museum charges an entrance fee but saying I LOVE MUSEUMS at the ticketing counter gets you 40% off the regular prices ($15 for adults/ $7.50 for kids).

This is a special discount from the National Heritage Board during this Explore Singapore 2010 campaign! For full details, see the official website at http://museums.com.sg/es10/

I’m really looking forward to our gigs later today… it’s all brand new material and you can bet that it’s going to be a truly untypical kid’s show *grin* After our shows, we’ll be having meet & greets with fans and friends, so do say HI!

When all that’s over, I’ll be chilling out with the BFF since she’s scored us tix for WildRice’s latest play, Cinderellah! Should be fun. Tonight’s the gala premiere of the play and I’m looking forward to it. I love supporting good local talent. More on that later 😉

Wishing you guys an awesome weekend, folks!!! See ya in a bit!!!

Happy things…

Bonjour! 🙂

I’m sitting here with my cuppa, taking a break from rehearsals & I’m in a happy mood.

Folks on my Facebook & Twitter may be a bit surprised, considering last evening’s lament I let out when I was alerted that some lame loser had created a fake Facebook account just to slime me all over on the LG Mobile Asia wall.

But it’s okay, this is really not the first time I’ve been a victim of malicious cyber bullying or uncalled for back-stabbing attacks by faceless folks who hide behind cyber identities.

I’ve got zero guilty conscience and the folks at LG are aware of what’s going on, plus friends and supporters have rallied around me. I’m just going to continue doing what I do. Focusing on my game!

Earlier this year, I was alerted about a magic thread running on a general online forum based on untruths about me, targeting J C & myself. The online users who were voicing out their hate were new users who created accounts seemingly just to vocalise their unhappiness.

I found out the name and information of one of the main culprits and was actually urged to take it to a legal level, because of defamation and all. But I decided not to. I could have. He made me look so bad with his lies. He tried to ruin my reputation. He was all out to get me.

But I chose grace. I didn’t want to stoop to his level, though his peers and his friends wanted to play dirty.

Such is life. One cannot expect to be understood and loved by all, even though you’ve always played nice. Still, I feel very lucky, that I’m so loved and supported.

Pity that though I’ve never done anything to these strangers, these folks are out to harm me and my reputation. It’s a big waste of precious time, when there’s so much better things to do instead of creating negativity. But such is life… I’ll just let Karma take care of it 🙂

Last night, I enjoyed a tapaps and wine dinner with my talented artist friend Ocean Wang. She just painted my portrait using oil on canvas and I was really moved, almost to tears (yes, as cheesy as it sounds) because no one’s ever done that for me. Check it out…

Okay, these pictures were taking in Ocean’s living room without exhibition lighting so it really doesn’t do my friend’s art justice. You can’t see the awesome textures and detail lovingly painted on the canvas… but she did a fantastic job! 🙂

Ocean, who has traveled the world, quite recently painted some iconic F1 personalities… You can definitely expect more things from this very talented lady artist 😉 Read my friend’s blog here.

Oh. And lunchtime today, I picked out the perfect jacket for this Saturday’s gigs at the Mint Museum of Toys! *grin* I was gnna take pictures but then reckoned, heck, why don’t you guys just come down this weekend and check it out? 😉 It’s kinda cute… in a vintage Beatles “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Band” kinda theme!

And just three hours earlier, J C & myself had a really fab podcast interview with Justin Young for iTricks! We’re the very first Singaporeans to be interviewed on the popular magic news portal, so it’s a real honor 🙂

Take a listen of it here – it’s just been uploaded online *grin* Or, if you prefer to download the MP3, click here but do note that it’s a huuuuuuuuge file. I had a field time doing the podcast interview, let us know what you think! We talked about everything and anything with Justin, he was just…in…credible!

Righty, I gotta continue with rehearsals now, before I head off to my photography class tonight *grin* I recently got a new camera (thank you BFF!) so I’m looking forward to explore the boundaries with my new toy. More on that later…

PS: Thank you for your support – Please continue to vote for me daily as your favorite LG ambassador here. LG gives away smartphones weekly, so good luck! The more times you vote, the greater your chances. Cheers! 😉
