Celebrating 5 years: ‘Magic Babe’ Ning & J C Sum’s limited edition Pentad Deck!

2 years in the making, our exclusive “Pentad Deck” is now here! These cards are on a limited edition run & will not be reprinted once they’re sold out. International magic supplier, Murphys Magic, carries them so you can easily order your “Pentad Deck” from your favorite magic shop!

Alternatively, you may also purchase your cards directly from us at Magic Boutique; we do autographs upon requests :) Click on the link for more details!

These Gemaco® casino quality poker-sized cards are printed in the U.S.A. on fine European paper stock and features regular faces. Each “Pentad Deck” also includes an extra blank-face card. The deck is encased in an all-silver tuck case with a clear front window that shows off the full color playing card back design.

Special kudos to our Japan-based manga artist Eldred, photographer Bernard Sim & graphic designer Matt for their input too! :)

J C & I are super thrilled that our limited edition “Pentad Decks” are simply flying off the shelves and according to Murphys Magic, more than a hundred sets of our “Pentad Decks” were sold just overnight. Woot!!!

As you may have read, “Pentad” is the classical Greek Pythagorean term used for the quantity of five and also refers to a period of five years. So our “Pentad Deck” basically commemorates our half-decade of J C & yours truly’s magical partnership. However, there’s more to it…

I personally love the deeper meaning of “Pentad” and when time allows, do read this interesting essay, which gives a brief insight on Pythagoras and the mystery of numbers. The “Pentad” is a powerful symbol with a rich history. It was used by mysterious Greek cults of old, as well as, the earlier Christians to represent the 5 sacred wounds of Jesus Christ (his hands, feet and side).

Righty, I should stop all this geeky babble… but history and mythology simply fascinates! Anyway, thank you so much for your support all these years. More to come because…….

Tomorrow we will officially announce our 9th mega illusion! Stay tuned to this blog & http://www.facebook.com/jcsum.magicbabening

The Urban Circus: FULL HOUSE!

I can’t believe it’s over! Gosh :) Yesterday’s event was a big success… a full house of delighted audiences, happy performers, lotsa videos and pics!

The Urban Circus was designed to showcase variety arts to heartlanders, bringing it to the neighborhood.. that’s why Marine Parade was chosen as our show venue.  It was a way for us to also help showcase passionate, up-coming local talent and help them in improving their performances and giving them the opportunity to perform on stage before a real audience, as they wouldn’t otherwise  have the chance.

J C Sum, with his 15+ years in the industry, produced the entire show while I helped out and played host. I know for a fact that all our semi-pro/ amateur performers enjoyed the experience tremendously & the people who spoke to us after the event enjoyed themselves tremendously!

Our darling “Own the Stage 2010″ winner Dean Wong received his trophy and cash & prizes after his well-received performance, which J C worked very closely with him to improve on. His wonderfully supportive family was there in the audience, and Dean certainly radiated on stage.

For a young 12-year old, Dean’s journey in magic is certainly stellar, having already been on OKTO’s one minute of fame *grin*

Jazz Ang was our magic parasol manipulator… Now, the hardworking NAFA student typically works the kids show market and does birthday parties, so he could get funds to personally finance his magic competition act… which you’d seen him perform on stage yesterday.

Norvin Ong, Jazz’s buddy is also a balloonist/ magician, helped out as his personal assistant. I personally wish Jazz well as I truly hope to see him pursue his dreams of winning magic competitions here and overseas soon :)

Exotic Middle Eastern style belly dancer, Charmaine Kho, was understandably a little nervous backstage before showtime but the bold chick completely delivered (no novice stage fright!) once it was her time on stage, as I knew she could.

I think all women should wholly embrace their femininity so honestly, I do consider Charmaine extremely courage and passionate about what she’s doing. Real women have curves. Real women aren’t the stick thin models you’d see on runways or commercials. She celebrates womanhood and we should all acknowledge that :)

His staple fire acts, escapology feats, and macho-styled magic aside… Larry the Daredevil Magician debuted his brand new “Trap Box” escape act, which was specially designed for him by J C.

Larry was the very first performer on stage, after yours truly (the event’s host/ ring mistress) opened the show, and started the energy pumping fast and furious! Larry’s sword box illusion, which he performed with Joys (his very lovely assistant) was also wildly received… It was a classic in magic given a hotter edge. The crowd also witnessed him magically pass solid chains through his neck, escape from a see-thru straitjacket, amongst other exciting things!

Adeline Ng aka Kinetic Gal closed the show, skillfully showing off her magic skills and juggling finesse… The cool, smart and sassy performer also did illusions on stage – magically cutting herself in half while still doing flawless yo-yo tricks, as well as, a delightful illusion involving a very special friend… Strawberry Shortcake… who assisted in her finale illusion, which entertained the kids and adults in the audience alike ;)

Ade’s tremendous growth in magic was noticed by several Singaporean magicians (folks from Red Dot Magic & the International Brotherhood of Magicians, etc) who came to the show and stayed back to talk to us later. They’d seen her at Magic Day @ The Arena… which was presented by Magic Boutique (Singapore) just last year at Clarke Quay.

You can view more performance pictures on our J C Sum & ‘Magic Babe’ Ning Facebook page… Mucho kudos to our talented shutterbugs Daryl & Weili!

The core Concept:Magic team (L-R: Ashraf aka Magic Boy, Joys, Larry the Daredevil Magician, Adeline Ng aka Kinetic Gal, yours truly aka ‘Magic Babe’ Ning & J C Sum aka the Bossman), minus Matt who couldn’t come at the last minute cos his poor wife got sick…

And below, us with the talents who made the production possible… The stars of The Urban Circus! L-R: Jazz Ang, Larry Lum, Joys,Charmaine Kho, Dean Wong, Adeline Ng, Ning Cai & J C Sum :)

Meanwhile, here’s some pictures of the weapon-wielding Ring Mistress ;) Kids, please don’t play with these at home!

At  the beginning of the show, a paper napkin rose magically changes into a real flower in a bright, bursting flash of light! Had my top hat custom-made for my size *grin* I actually prefer this much more to my collapsible one.

I had a lot of fun putting together this slightly different costume for The Urban Circus… new kickass boots, hot pants, fishnet stockings, fingerless gloves and a belt to hold my beautiful deadly little things…

Stay tuned for my lethal Japanese sais and nunchuck video coming up shortly *grin* We’re currently editing these new videos!

For another perspective, do see Backstage Business for J C’s objective “show producer” thoughts on the project. The Bossman did a fabulous job with the light & sound design as well, never mind the first 5 minutes of showtime because of the trip. Mucho kudos to all the technical people and show crew who did their magic backstage too, to make it all possible ;) And once again… THANK YOU for supporting these upcoming local talents!

I think these semi-professional/ amateur performers certainly have potential, and I’d love to see them blossom further. It was a pleasure helping out and getting to know them better. Till then… ta for now, more later…

Sexy Magic Genies and Middle Eastern lamps…

Last Monday, J C & I met up with Nick John (winner of our latest Facebook contest) to personally give him his prize in town. Here’s us with the English gentle giant :) The 10″ lamp practically looks puny in his big hands!

And then just last night, the photoshop whiz created something really cute and posted it on my Facebook wall… hahaha :)

10 points for creativity indeed ;) Anyways, stay tuned for something wicked this way comes

Updates et al.

Sorry for missing in action a little here… but it’s been a wickedly busy work schedule. After coming back to Singapore from the Middle East, I had a stage gig at Shangrila for Manulife Financial.

Do check out J C’s blog about our 2 back-to-back gigs here in Singapore before we went across the Causeway for a weekend for illusion shows at different venues!

Before the core Concept:Magic team flew up to the Middle East to perform for Oman royalty at the Al Bustan Palace, J C & I met up with veteran world class illusionist Marco Tempest :)

It was a great honor to be part of the Essential Magic Conference, created by a network of leading international professionals such as Marco & Luis De Matos. After  the taping sessions, we enjoyed a hearty lunch together and the hours simply flew by.

Some magicians had shared that Marco wasn’t a very nice person, but I found the man to be extremely sweet and passionate about what he does. He’s a workaholic like J C, clocking in many many hours and he works hard, fast, and smart. They could almost be twins, in that aspect. LOL. Maybe some of the ones who talked badly about Marco Tempest behind his back were people who are also jealous of his success or had tried ripping off his “virtual magician” material, I dunno.

It’s been the case with us – envious competition trying to smear our name or pull down our reputation, instead of just pulling up their own socks and daring to be original.

Anyway, Marco’s definitely a brilliant visionary and I’m really thrilled about his new WIP material that he showed us on his iPad *grin* Will update on the video link soon, once it’s up!

So the team and us flew to Dubai then Oman, in the Middle East, that evening after meeting Marco in the morning… we spent 4 days there for a very important gig that had Mr Akio Toyoda flying up for the glamorous Lexus/ Toyota event! His Highness was also there, see the Omani news report here :)

That’s us when we arrived after hours and hours of traveling… and yes, that’s me in my Singa “Courtesy” Lion t-shirt. I actually received the MGS Singa Award in 1998 for being the “Most Courteous Student” and every school only had one representative collect their award at Raffles Hotel for the nationwide event!

Anyways. The  Al Bustan Palace is simply GORGEOUS. We were very well taken care of and the team managed to score some time at the private beach and pool for some fun in the sun, when we were not working. Here are some random pics from my iPhone…

It was a long airplane ride as we had to transit to Oman from Dubai, so it was grrrrrrrrrreat to finally get to chillax! Flipping through the papers, we saw a full page ad welcoming the Toyota President to their country, as well as, a media write-up.

Also, the cheeky gal in me noticed something instantly, while flipping through their classifieds *grin*

…Do you see it? :) Hurhurhurhur…

Anyways!

We all got to get some fun in the sun when we weren’t working :) JC got a bit of a sunburn cos he was seriously working on his tan while the rest of us pretty much splashed around and then some *grin* Here’s some pictures…

Here’s the beautiful private beach at the Al Bustan Palace, where we were given very lavish rooms  and were pampered like royalty…

As you can clearly see… it was really HOT in Oman. I was so glad I had my sunnies!

We squeezed into a hammock… funny thing was, the doofus that I am, I unglamorously tumbled and fell over while trying to make space for Ade & Joys to join me. Larry was so tickled with our antics, it’s a wonder the camera wasn’t shaking when he took our picture :P

Yep, all of us definitely came home with a nice glowing tan :)

The gig went superbly well and everyone loved our show – so much so that after the event, some Omani VIPs in their traditional garb came up to us to thank us for the show. It was an honor truly, to be able to represent our country.

I was very surprised at their warmth… the locals actually let me play with their khanjar knives, beautiful things they are indeed ;) Yes, I always have had a fetish for blades.

For pictures and more about our performance, check out Backstage Business.

One very funny incident that happened was a WARDROBE MALFUNCTION that happened during showtime *giggle* However, it wasn’t me – it was Bossman himself :P His new designer jeans weren’t seasoned and it ripped during the show… and because what we were doing were pretty physical onstage, the rip just got worse along the way! :P

JC did a good job hiding the hole near his butt, but (no pun intended) the good-natured UK event organizers loved to tease him about the incident. If we were in a more conservative place (I wore sleeves this time around), maybe we could possibly have been stoned for moon-ing royalty. LOL!

Actually, in 2006, my pants did split on stage during a show. It was reeeeeeeally embarrassing because of all days, I’d decided to wear red lace panties… like D’oh!!!! My black leather pants had split badly at the crotch seams right after we performed J C’s 3-inch Hole illusion, but the saving grace was… it was at the very end of the show :P So yes, things like these do happen. Heh.

Anyways. After our show, on our way back to Singapore from the Middle East, we did some shopping and picked up a very lovely looking exotic oil lamp – which looks very magical indeed, like from the days of mystical Aladdin lore *grin*

We’re giving this authentic “magic lamp” away (sorry, genie not included) in our latest and newest Facebook contest! We only have one to give away, and this is how the near-foot long beaut looks like…

Check out J C’s latest blog entry here for full details on how to participate :) This on-going Facebook contest ends at midnight this Wednesday, so don’t miss out!
