The Mind Heist: The Ultimate Social Magic Experiment

Happy 2012 everyone!

I trust you’re having a fantastic start to the year, with exciting possibilities and golden opportunities greeting you :) If you missed our NYE performance on Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde (France’s most popular variety show that’s been running for 14 years now and still going very strong), you can watch it here:

60 million viewers around the world tune into it and we’ve been asked to come back this year by the TV producers… Really awesome that we can make Singapore proud again! And speaking of which…

On the days leading up to The Mind Heist, I’ve been extremely strict with myself in all the necessarily preparations for this mind experiment happening this Saturday that sees J C & yours truly attempting to set a world record for reading the minds of 100 different people in 1 sitting.

So that means more healthy food with lots of water, more meditation, more yoga and absolutely no alcohol, no late nights and no sex (I just leave that space blank on application forms).

As I poke on my keyboard, I have to admit that I’m feeling completely whacked out and exhausted. Don’t get me wrong now. This girl is still deeply excited about this never-been-done-before stunt which will take place at Sinema Old School. It’s just the mental and physical fatigue from all the intensive mind training, that’s getting to me.

However, I’ll definitely do my utmost BEST, simply because I want to do my country proud & I don’t believe in making excuses. You know… It’s incredible but us two Singaporeans, received the sincere blessings from Mr Vanni Pule, international president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Sign ups online for The Mind Heist have been encouraging, though plenty of people shared that they were highly afraid of getting their thoughts read by us, but were content to simply witness our mind heisting process. Hmph. Wusses!!! ;)

But seriously, I’m deeply moved and very appreciative of all the sincere support we’ve got from people not just here in Singapore, but from all over the world too… from Taiwan, to France, England, America, Australia, Spain, India, Canada, Israel, Malaysia, Middle East… it’s extremely touching! THANK YOU EVERYONE :) The event as you know, will be streamed live on the internet in real time, so anyone anywhere will be able to join in!

The media (magic and mainstream) has also been nothing but super with event pre-publicity for The Mind Heist. In fact, several have even arranged for their plucky reporters to be part of the 100 in this mind experiment.

Just yesterday, we were on 987FM’s highly popular Muttons on the Move, with radio DJs Justin Ang & Vernon A:

If you missed us on the airwaves yesterday, here’s the video of us mind-heisting both JA & Vernon in the 987FM studio!

We’re also featured in an exclusive interview on the OMY lifestyle news portal:

As well as, on 4-pages of popular online news and entertainment portal, xinMSN:

ShinMin Daily News also published our story on their newspaper:

We were meant to be on 91.3FM this morning but our dear friend radio DJ Rod Monteiro was rushed to the hospital yesterday after getting a mild stroke while on air. Highly unexpected and very worrying, because Rod is such an active sporty guy. It’s shocking for me because I was just texting my friend yesterday. Please pray for his speedy recovery!

Oh yes…

J C & I will be on Channel News Asia‘s AMlive on Friday 8AM, so do tune in. Something very wicked this way comes ;) And prior to that, we’ll be on Class95’s CarTunes with popular radio DJs Jean Danker & Bobby Tonelli at 6:30pm tomorrow (Thursday). Also, look out for our exclusive interview in the TODAY newspaper coming out very shortly.

A shout out of thanks to our friend Nicholas Chee, founder of Sinema Old School, for this picture taken with his smart phone. They’ve completely dressed up the place for us, mucho kudos to the passionate Sinema TV team.

We’re gonna make history this Saturday, Singapore!!!

The Magic Pilgrim is back…

HELLO WORLD!!!!! Namaste! Bonjour! Kuzu zangpo! Aloha! Assalamou Alykoum! Ciao! Tsonga!

These are just a handful of greetings I’d learnt during my 9 non-stop months of constant traveling for a book project with the BFF; we certainly had many adventures together – some funny, others nerve-wrecking, but what doesn’t kill you certainly makes you stronger (like learning never to store your trusty laptop with all your written drafts in your check-in luggage in Madagascar).

Pam & I really both missed our loved ones in Singapore, it’s not easy when people you care about are miles away, so I’m truly glad to be finally back HOME because truly, there’s just no other place quite like it :)

Reflectively, I know I’ve certainly changed a lot during the time away from home. It’s been an insightful inner journey for me too, not just a physical one. The girl whose blog you’re reading, is no longer the same person who left 9 months ago. I am grateful for the many “teachers” I’ve met along the way, who have so generously taught me in their own ways, how to open my heart and live… not just to merely exist.

Our book chronicals the adventures of two BFFs (Best Friends Forever) comes out next year just before Christmas, so do look out for it :) International literary giant, Marshall Cavendish International (Asia), is our publisher.

Honestly, I’m really excited because ever since I was a child, I’d dreamt of being a writer… much like one of my favorite women authors Anais Nin, who cleverly stated that “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection.”

So like everything else that I’m passionate about in my life, this Libra girl is going to make sure she does her very best and balances everything on her plate well. And geez, is it one big heavy plate!

Coming back to my 2nd home, the Concept:Magic studio, was comforting despite already knowing what’s in store for me for the next quarter and a half :) I’d just touched down yesterday in Changi International Airport, and this morning already saw me engaging in intensive rehearsals for…

*brace yourselves*

…Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde!!!!

Yes, my stage partner J C Sum & I with our team will be flying to Paris next week for the TV taping of the popular French magic gala show, which broadcasts in all French speaking countries and then some. Our episode screens on New Year’s Eve, and those with cable in Singapore can also tune in to watch it on TV5 Monde!

It certainly is a great honor, and I’m deeply grateful and humbled to be one half of the performing team that can make Singapore proud since this is the first time the producers of this long-running hit magic television show has arranged for Singaporean local talent over! Truly, I hope our country will have the opportunity to have more homegrown magic stars over in the near future… We’re really much more than just a little red dot ;)

Anyway, do stay tuned to our blogs, ‘cos J C & I have more super exciting news to share with all of y’all very soon. There’s some truly cool magic projects we have that once again, we really hope to infuse more positive power to our local performing community and empower more up-and-coming magicians/ enthusiasts.

Ta for now, more later!

Back and so ready to rock, roll, teleport and then some…

Updates et al.

Sorry for missing in action a little here… but it’s been a wickedly busy work schedule. After coming back to Singapore from the Middle East, I had a stage gig at Shangrila for Manulife Financial.

Do check out J C’s blog about our 2 back-to-back gigs here in Singapore before we went across the Causeway for a weekend for illusion shows at different venues!

Before the core Concept:Magic team flew up to the Middle East to perform for Oman royalty at the Al Bustan Palace, J C & I met up with veteran world class illusionist Marco Tempest :)

It was a great honor to be part of the Essential Magic Conference, created by a network of leading international professionals such as Marco & Luis De Matos. After  the taping sessions, we enjoyed a hearty lunch together and the hours simply flew by.

Some magicians had shared that Marco wasn’t a very nice person, but I found the man to be extremely sweet and passionate about what he does. He’s a workaholic like J C, clocking in many many hours and he works hard, fast, and smart. They could almost be twins, in that aspect. LOL. Maybe some of the ones who talked badly about Marco Tempest behind his back were people who are also jealous of his success or had tried ripping off his “virtual magician” material, I dunno.

It’s been the case with us – envious competition trying to smear our name or pull down our reputation, instead of just pulling up their own socks and daring to be original.

Anyway, Marco’s definitely a brilliant visionary and I’m really thrilled about his new WIP material that he showed us on his iPad *grin* Will update on the video link soon, once it’s up!

So the team and us flew to Dubai then Oman, in the Middle East, that evening after meeting Marco in the morning… we spent 4 days there for a very important gig that had Mr Akio Toyoda flying up for the glamorous Lexus/ Toyota event! His Highness was also there, see the Omani news report here :)

That’s us when we arrived after hours and hours of traveling… and yes, that’s me in my Singa “Courtesy” Lion t-shirt. I actually received the MGS Singa Award in 1998 for being the “Most Courteous Student” and every school only had one representative collect their award at Raffles Hotel for the nationwide event!

Anyways. The  Al Bustan Palace is simply GORGEOUS. We were very well taken care of and the team managed to score some time at the private beach and pool for some fun in the sun, when we were not working. Here are some random pics from my iPhone…

It was a long airplane ride as we had to transit to Oman from Dubai, so it was grrrrrrrrrreat to finally get to chillax! Flipping through the papers, we saw a full page ad welcoming the Toyota President to their country, as well as, a media write-up.

Also, the cheeky gal in me noticed something instantly, while flipping through their classifieds *grin*

…Do you see it? :) Hurhurhurhur…

Anyways!

We all got to get some fun in the sun when we weren’t working :) JC got a bit of a sunburn cos he was seriously working on his tan while the rest of us pretty much splashed around and then some *grin* Here’s some pictures…

Here’s the beautiful private beach at the Al Bustan Palace, where we were given very lavish rooms  and were pampered like royalty…

As you can clearly see… it was really HOT in Oman. I was so glad I had my sunnies!

We squeezed into a hammock… funny thing was, the doofus that I am, I unglamorously tumbled and fell over while trying to make space for Ade & Joys to join me. Larry was so tickled with our antics, it’s a wonder the camera wasn’t shaking when he took our picture :P

Yep, all of us definitely came home with a nice glowing tan :)

The gig went superbly well and everyone loved our show – so much so that after the event, some Omani VIPs in their traditional garb came up to us to thank us for the show. It was an honor truly, to be able to represent our country.

I was very surprised at their warmth… the locals actually let me play with their khanjar knives, beautiful things they are indeed ;) Yes, I always have had a fetish for blades.

For pictures and more about our performance, check out Backstage Business.

One very funny incident that happened was a WARDROBE MALFUNCTION that happened during showtime *giggle* However, it wasn’t me – it was Bossman himself :P His new designer jeans weren’t seasoned and it ripped during the show… and because what we were doing were pretty physical onstage, the rip just got worse along the way! :P

JC did a good job hiding the hole near his butt, but (no pun intended) the good-natured UK event organizers loved to tease him about the incident. If we were in a more conservative place (I wore sleeves this time around), maybe we could possibly have been stoned for moon-ing royalty. LOL!

Actually, in 2006, my pants did split on stage during a show. It was reeeeeeeally embarrassing because of all days, I’d decided to wear red lace panties… like D’oh!!!! My black leather pants had split badly at the crotch seams right after we performed J C’s 3-inch Hole illusion, but the saving grace was… it was at the very end of the show :P So yes, things like these do happen. Heh.

Anyways. After our show, on our way back to Singapore from the Middle East, we did some shopping and picked up a very lovely looking exotic oil lamp – which looks very magical indeed, like from the days of mystical Aladdin lore *grin*

We’re giving this authentic “magic lamp” away (sorry, genie not included) in our latest and newest Facebook contest! We only have one to give away, and this is how the near-foot long beaut looks like…

Check out J C’s latest blog entry here for full details on how to participate :) This on-going Facebook contest ends at midnight this Wednesday, so don’t miss out!

The Impossible 4D Lottery Prediction: Official Video!

Hey everyone :)

The official video for our recent lottery prediction which wrapped up last week is finally out! *grin* It was a Singapore first, which saw the event stretch over 2 weeks and featured in various media – both local and overseas!

J C directed this video, which is starkly different from our usual… fans of movies like Momento & Vantage Point may appreciate the non-linear way of story telling. Check it out!

In all honesty, I really really believe storytelling to be an extremely important creative process. It’s really TRAGIC that this fact is sadly overlooked by many. The trick is to artfully weave something interesting and unique, to stand out from the usual.

It is a strategy that needs to be plotted from the start – if you don’t have a good plan, it’s not going to work.

Anyway, I personally felt that our recent psychological illusion was a success on many levels because it’s reached its objective and produced the best outcome possible – a successful entertaining local talking point which helped us plug our show at St James, coupled with a positive social message and a wonderful charity which benefited from it all!

So yes, it was a positive WIN-WIN-WIN :) :) :)

Righty, before I go, I’d like to thank RAZOR TV for featuring J C & myself on their list of top Asian celebrities! More details on J C’s blog *grin*

Ta for now, more later… we’ve got a big, customised illusion show for Singtel at Zouk tomorrow, so we gotta prep for that :) Woohoo!
